Israel Post Co. accuses Communications Minister of not implementing agreements

The Israel Post Company said last week that due to dispute with Ariel Atias, Communications Minister, it would lay off 150 employees immediately and cancel the planned hiring of 700 contract employees as regular employees.

In a statement issued by the company it accused the communications minister of not implementing agreements guaranteeing the company’s financial standing.

A spokesman for the company noted that a year ago an agreement was reached between the postal company and Ministries of Communications, Finance and the General Federation of Labor in Israel which was supposed to furnish the company with the necessary standing. Since the agreement was reached the Minister has apparently done little to implement it.

In the statement the company also threatened to cut executive salaries by 10 pct and reduce the marketing budget because the company lost little over NIS 90 million in 2007 (around USD 30 million), more than double the projected loss.

The company which is the largest logistic provider in Israel provides its customers with highly sophisticated mail sorting technology at three centers in Israel; computerized point-of-service stations at the branches; a computerized system for tracking postal items.

It has a large transportation fleet that reaches everywhere in the country daily and sophisticated control mechanisms for collection and distribution of mail.

The project also included a 7 touch points’ integration with their ERP system. This project was one of the most demanding and challenging in terms of WMS environment readiness, training and management : the WMS went live in less than 3 months, and the warehouse operation was only stopped for 1/2 day for the transition to the new WMS.

Emirates and Indian Posts start exchanging electronic money transfers

The Emirate and Indian postal services have joined the UPU’s International Financial System network to offer their customers a new possibility for sending money electro-nically.

In addition to being eco-nomical, a new electronic money-transfer service launched by the two postal operators is fast (recipients receive their money within hours) and offered in many post offices. As part of a first phase, customers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can send transfers from any post office in the country to 97 main post offices and more than 2,400 branches in the regions of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkota and Kerala. The service will soon be extended to all of India.

At the moment, money sent to India is delivered directly to the recipient’s home, but more options will be added later.

At a worldwide level, the exchange corridor between India and the UAE is among the 10 most important ones in terms of money transfers from migrants. According to the World Bank, close to 2.2 million Indian immigrants reside in the UAE. Each year, migrants from all over the world send 27 billion USD to India.

The transfers between the Indian and Emirate Posts are possible thanks to the IFS solution, the backbone of the UPU’s international electronic postal payments network. Ninety countries are currently using or testing IFS, which is bringing solutions to issues around money transfers, international migration and poverty reduction.

India, China and the UAE are the most recent large countries to have adopted IFS in order to improve and facilitate money transfers for their customers.
