Q-Post was ‘less productive’ in 2007

Q-POST was “less productive” during 2007 in comparison with previous years, Q-Post chairman Ali Mohamed al-Ali has said.

In an interview with Qatar Radio on Monday Al-Ali said that “high inflation” had its negative influence also on the postal sector and “it was the reason behind the drop in the corporation’s performance.”

“Our services to the public were much less than our ambitions,” the official said.
He said that issuance of new stamps “was not everything” in the postal field and the main goal when the corporation was established in 2001 was to present the best postal services to the public.

The official said his corporation needs to re-evaluate the services it provides.
He said: “Talented Qatari nationals are leaving Q-Post for other companies because of the poor salaries they earn here, as the corporation attracts less attention than others at the official level”.

“Our only achievement in 2007 was the issuance of a stamp of Qatar’s rulers,” Al-Ali said and added: “But that was too modest one.”

DHL wins Bahrainisation awards

DHL has been recognised for its training and development excellence and commitment to Bahrainisation with two national awards.

In a recent ceremony held under the patronage of Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi and organised by the Specific Council for Vocational Training, DHL was commended for its training programmes aimed at grass roots, vocational development of Bahraini nationals, particularly youth, as well as for its overall employee development programmes.

DHL’s investment in training during 2007 has increased by 58 per cent compared to 2006, and reflects the company’s commitment to providing service excellence through its people, in order to be the first choice for customers.

The investment is expected to increase in 2008, as a result of plans to develop Bahraini managers, and the introduction of several new training initiatives and programs to develop local skill sets.

Training in DHL is divided into three categories including technical skills training, developmental training, and management development training. In 2007, 190 staff were trained in various technical skills which included such elements as using freight handling and loading equipment.

Management development is also high on the agenda, with a series of new training programmes implemented this year, including “Your Way to Success: Supervisory Development” and “Bullet Proof Manager: Management Development programme”.

DHL plans to introduce an additional Management Development program in 2008 under the name “The Leader Within”.

Kuwait postal sector to be privatized

A specialist team has been assigned the task of privatizing the postal sector,’ Al-Watan daily quoted Assistant Undersecretary for Postal Sector at the Ministry of Communications Saud Al-Asosi as saying.

There are several steps in privatizing the sector and the first step will be to establish a joint-stock company, he said, adding ‘the government will be the major shareholder and a certain percentage of the company’s shares will be floated for public subscription.’

The assistant undersecretary assured that all the 1,600 employees of the sector will retain their jobs even after the privatization and the company might recruit additional employees. ‘But the ministry will do the supervising and monitoring role and the company will have to abide by the conditions, terms, ministerial decisions and international postal regulations,’ he noted.

Asosi was optimistic that the change will boost the postal sector and will save the ministry a lot of expenses.

UPU seeks support for express money order

Universal Postal Union (UPU) is mustering the support of regional postal organisations for its International Express Money Order service which is designed to provide speedy electronic money transfer through the postal network backed by the UPU-developed IFS (international financial services) software.

Gulf postal organisations were introduced to the new service at a workshop held recently in Dubai under the chairmanship of Emirates Post. The participating countries included the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia and Djibouti.

Speaking on the occasion, Henri Biadala, head of the working group on IFS, La Poste, said the new product was part of UPU’s efforts to eliminate paper-based remittances and grab a larger share of the remittance market by providing affordable money transfer through the postal network.

“This workshop is part of a series of regional workshops initiated by UPU to familiarise all stake holders with the IFS-based International Express Money Order,” said Biadala.

“IFS is a reliable, adaptable and easy-to-use tool and can be installed in the remotest areas of the world. The pilot projects have already been successfully carried out in many countries.”
