Aramex brings in real-time scanners

Dubai-based express firm Aramex has introduced a real-time scanner system which it says will be deployed in its operations worldwide by the end of this year.

The USD 1.5 million system of wireless, handheld scanners is designed to update clients with delivery and collection details from ground couriers on the move, and has already been deployed throughout the Gulf region, Jordan and Lebanon.

“Banks are especially pleased with the advantages of this new system,” said Iyad Kamal, Aramex’s vice-president for logistics & ground services.

“Providing banks with instantaneous delivery updates of their invoices and credit card deliveries enhances efficiency of their operations,” he added.

Aramex, listed on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM: ARMX), employs over 5500 people in 240 offices and offers services worldwide through a network of alliances.

The company said it would upgrade its ground services equipment – to use the latest in advanced technology – following recommendations from a forum of 50 of its operational managers in Amman, Jordan, in December.

DHL completes Dubai hub refurbishment

DHL has completed a AED3.5 million (USD950,000) refurbishment project at its Dubai hub.

DHL, Deutsche Post’s courier and logistics business, claimed the hub, located in Dubai International Airport, will increase DHL United Arab Emirate’s (UAE) capacity to reach 40,000 shipments and 150,000 kilograms per day over the next five years.Paul Dowling, hub manager for DHL UAE, said: “The upgrade of Hub facilities included the installation of a high specification conveyor belt system and 400 square meters of castor decking to facilitate movement of airline containers. In addition, new operation offices were part of the expansion as well as putting in place a CCTV system provided with 64 cameras to ensure security for all shipments.”Bachi Spiga, area operations director for DHL Middle East, said: “DHL has been pursuing a sustained growth strategy focusing on building capacity and continuous renovations. Through significant investments in infrastructure and technology, we have reinforced our leadership position to ensure we exceed our customers’ expectations.” DHL said the refurbishment project is the latest of several renovation and expansion moves planned by DHL in the region to accommodate both domestic and international express and logistics growth.

Saudi Post Sets Up Biggest e-Portal

The Saudi Post has established the biggest e-portal in the Kingdom on the World Wide Web in order to provide information about the post service to the public. The portal includes e-commerce and a list of the post products and services that are offered for sale.

The site also has the facility to accept online payment and gives the customer the choice of packaging and monitoring his mail from the moment of shipment to the time of arrival.

Mohammed Bantan, president of the Saudi Post, said that the site offers e-letters and e-telegraphs in addition to greeting cards, where customers can choose the card and write their message and then the Saudi Post would print it and send it to its destination.

Empost signs agreement with Jordanian Consulate in Dubai

EmpostEmpost, the UAE’s national courier company has recently signed a cooperative agreement with the Jordanian Consulate in Dubai to provide delivery of consular documents, passports and travel documents to the consulate’s clients through EmpostEmpost’s “Jawaz” service. The agreement was signed by H.E. Naef Al Zaidan, Jordanian Consul in Dubai, and Sultan Al Midfa, CEO EmpostEmpost.

Jawaz Services is optional and can be requested while submitting Visa applications. EmpostEmpost has set up counters at the Embassy and the Consulate, to enable clients to avail the service without hassle.

In addition to the Jordanian Consulate, EmpostEmpost has entered into partnerships with the embassies and consulates of US, Syria, Saudi, the Philippines, and Indian to deliver passports and consular documents to their respective clients through the Jawaz service wherever they are in the UAE. EmpostEmpost is now providing its services to many public and private sectors through its different services.

TNT appoints new Abu Dhabi General Manager

TNT has appointed Salim KP as its new Abu Dhabi General Manager, who plans to grow the company’s UAE capital business by 50% this year.

Salim KP takes up the top position following a year as TNT’s Key Accounts Manager, where he was instrumental in securing numerous national and international accounts. He will immediately begin implementing a broad range of changes and new initiatives to spearhead TNT’s rapid growth in Abu Dhabi.

“Salim’s target is to establish TNT Abu Dhabi as the second best express delivery provider in the capital, and place us firmly on track to becoming the industry’s premier company by the end of 2008,” said Bryan Moulds, Country General Manager, TNT UAE.

“He will be focusing on the banking sector and the oil and aviation industries. We will be expanding our operations in Abu Dhabi by adding two more satellite offices and will double our staff and current fleet.”

Prior to joining TNT in 2006, KP worked as Country Manager for First Flight ME and has nearly two decades of international industry experience working in India, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, where he won UAE Sales Person of the year on four consecutive occasions.
