New Zealand Post: New Name for Auckland's Newest Mail Centre

Auckland’s newest mail centre has a new name. The Auckland Mail Centre – Te Riu o Tamaki Makau Rau will become the official name of the mail centre, which will process all of greater Auckland’s mail.

Situated at Highbrook Business Park in East Tamaki, the Auckland Mail Centre – Te Riu o Tamaki Makau Rau will process on average around 1.4 to 1.7 million of items of mail each day from Pokeno in the South to Cape Reinga in the north once fully operational.

That will increase to around 1.8 to 1.9 million, and sometimes up to 2.1 million items of mail a day around the Christmas period.

Designed by architects Warren and Mahoney, who based their design on sustainable principles, the Auckland Mail Centre – Te Riu o Tamaki Makau Rau, recycles water and waste water recycling, has indigenous planting, permeable paving, solar heating, low energy lighting and electrical equipment.

The centre is the largest of its kind in New Zealand, spanning two football fields and housing eight new state-of-the-art mail processing machines.

The new name is a result of a staff challenge and external consultation, says Mrs Day-Townsend.

Mrs Day-Townsend says the Centre is currently processing around 40 per cent of Greater Auckland’s mail but that will increase to 100 per cent early next year.

The Auckland Mail Centre – Te Riu o Tamaki Makau Rau will have an official opening ceremony in the middle of next year.

FedEx launches Next-day delivery to Brisbane

FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. has announced the launch of a next-day delivery service between Auckland and Brisbane, Australia. The new service will reduce transit times for shipments to Brisbane substantially, from two business days at present to one business day, and will result in later cut-off times for pickups.

“We have introduced this service in response to the steady growth of New Zealand businesses in the Queensland market, especially those in the marine, education and health sectors,” said Rhicke Jennings, managing director, Australia and New Zealand, FedEx. “We see this new service as a further commitment to the New Zealand market, which is experiencing significant increases in shipments on the trans-Tasman lane.

“The enhanced service will provide customers with increased flexibility and greater convenience, as well as a competitive edge over businesses using other modes of delivery,” he said.

The new one-day service reinforces FedEx ongoing commitment to deliver the highest level of service to customers.

Express Delivery under Pressure to Add More Value as Parcel Service Closes the Gap

Europe’s parcel and express delivery business is expected to continue to grow at a higher rate than in previous years due to an increase in business-to-consumer (B2C) traffic and strong international demand, according to new research by market analyst Datamonitor.

However, the research, “European Express Market Map 2008,” which covers 12 major European markets, says that although currently exhibiting a higher growth rate than parcel services, express services are going to have to demonstrate extra value as customer demand is shifting to using cheaper yet reliable parcel services in key growth areas of international and business-to-consumer (B2C) delivery services.

“Over the next five years, the B2C and C2C (consumer-to-consumer) sectors will experience faster growth than B2B (business-to-business), due to increased e-commerce activity, especially in less mature home delivery markets such as Italy and Spain,” said Erik van Baaren, Datamonitor express analyst and author of the study.

International services are also growing at a higher rate primarily due to the enlargement of the European Union and the trend to centralize operations to fewer countries and outsource manufacturing to low-cost countries, according to van Baaren.
