DHL New Zealand venture Express Couriers buys Roadstar Transport Ltd

Express Couriers, the joint venture between DHL and New Zealand Post, fulfil customer demand with the acquisition of Roadstar Transport Ltd.

This acquisition while further cementing Express Couriers market leadership, responds to customer demand for the addition of a multi-package and palletised transport solution to their current Whole Package offering.

Following on from Express Couriers transition to New Zealand Post and DHL joint ownership two years ago, this next leap forward is a signal of their commitment to the market, and their customers.

Broadening The Whole Package offer with the addition of multi-package and palletised transport solutions, compliment Express Couriers current range of services provided by Pace, CourierPost and Contract Logistics alongside the wider services of New Zealand Post and DHL.

The two companies will continue to operate independently, and each of their current portfolios of products and services will be maintained. The Roadstar management will remain with the company, and no job losses are planned.

Roadstar, with nearly 200 staff, has a fleet of 141 trucks and transports about 40,000 consignments a month.

New Zealand Post’s Green Mail Centre

New Zealand Post Chairman Rt Hon Jim Bolger will officially open the new Waikato Mail Centre in Hamilton on Monday June 25. The building’s green design features helped its commendation at the 2006 Govt3 Awards aimed at helping central government agencies take practical action to become more sustainable.

These features include sustainably sourced timber, environmentally friendly paint and rainwater harvesting.

New Zealand Post Group Chief Executive John Allen says opting for this style of design was an easy decision to make.

“Sustainability is all about considering the impacts of the actions and decisions you make today on the people and environment of tomorrow.

“Three years ago we had the chance to incorporate these design features and put them at the forefront of our planning rather than just see them as a final add-on.

“At New Zealand Post we constantly strive to work smarter and more efficiently as well as to be a great place to work.

“Choosing sustainable building designs fits those goals and allows us to contribute positively towards the future of our business, our staff and our customers.”

NZ Post also plans to open a sustainably designed mail centre in Christchurch this year and in Auckland next year.

Building features:
Solar water heating
Environmentally friendly paint systems
Carpet and ceiling tiles with a high re-cycled material content
Energy Star appliances
Low energy bulbs
Lighting zones taking advantage of natural lighting and operational times

DHL spreads network in booming China

DHL announced recently it would invest a further USD110 million into infrastructure in China to meet the country’s continuing huge economic growth.

New Zealand DHL Express general manager Derek Anderson says the country is one of the fastest-growing markets within the company’s global network.

More than half of DHL’s total investment in the Asia Pacific region has been in China in the past five years.

DHL now has a freight and logistics network covering 318 cities across the country.

With multiple dialects throughout the country, the continued expansion means language has been one of the more difficult and ongoing hurdles to overcome.

He says the Chinese government’s approach has changed considerably in the past 20 years. It has moved from a closed and highly bureaucratic system to one in which the benefits of the growing economy from the main centres is shared across the country.

This directive has led DHL to venture westward, outside the usual key economic areas in China, establishing a presence in provinces such as Shaanxi, Yunnan and Sichuan.

The company has also opened 16 new branches. DHL Global Forwarding acquired 17 domestic airfreight licences, to give second and third-tier cities access to key economic zones so they can contribute to provincial growth.
