South African Postal Business Unit favours 3% tariff hike

The Postal Business Unit, a division of the SA Postal Services (Sapo), has said it was in favour of the 3 percent general tariff increase for this year despite enormous operational challenges it faced in terms of its licence conditions.

Sapo’s licence conditions prescribe that it provides millions of South Africans, irrespective of their physical location, with a basic postal service that is reliable, affordable and equitable.

New Zealand Post buys remainder of Books and More

New Zealand Post has bought out W H Smith to take full control of franchise retailer Books and More.

NZ Post retail group manager Terence Delaney said the deal to buy the other 50 per cent of the business was consistent with the state-owned postal company’s investment plan of having a majority shareholding to create a “consistent strategy” across the network. The brand was also a good fit with NZ Post’s retail businesses.

Kapiti entrepreneur buys Dominion Post New Zealand

Kapiti entrepreneur Gregg Nelson has bought the Dominion Postal Logistics company and a registered trademark for Dominion Post and web addresses dominionpost.co.nz and thedominionpost.co.nz.

It is those names that are causing him a few headaches and have brought threats of legal action from the Dominion Post newspaper.

Nelson plans to have his Dominion Post running by the end of March.

New Zealand Post sees business mail as key to growth

The state-owned mail agency posted a 24% rise in after-tax profit in the last financial year, thanks to diversifying its business, NZ Post chief executive officer John Allen said yesterday.

While visiting the Taranaki Mail Centre in New Plymouth — which handles 35 million items of mail a year — Mr Allen said that despite the use of the Internet, business mail was becoming more popular.

Business mail helped NZ Post make an after-tax profit of $27.1 million for the year ended June 30.
