Pete's Post Mail service offers New Zealanders consumer choice

Southland’s newest mail delivery business has opened in Invercargill.

Pete’s Post director Murray McBeth said the business opened in Invercargill as part of a strategic plan to offer a postal system from Kaitaia to Bluff.

The business has been operating for four years and was set up as an alternative to New Zealand Post. It has 10 franchise areas throughout New Zealand.

New Zealand Post chief executive laments image

New Zealand Post still suffers from the “postie” tag despite heavy investment in electronic networks and infrastructure to meet the future, its new chief executive, John Allen, said.

Mr Allen, 42, took over from Elmar Toime nearly a month ago and is set to educate the market on New Zealand Post’s electronic capabilities.

The former head of New Zealand Post’s Letters and Enterprise group said letters and courier services were increasingly being conducted electronically and via the Internet, but New Zealand Post’s capability in that area had not been communicated to customers well enough in the past.

NZ Post banking on further growth

Letter volumes have continued to increase this year, underpinning NZ Post profits, but new chief executive John Allen accepts the tide is turning. Replacing letters as the mainstream source of revenue for the state-owned postal service will be fully owned subsidiary Kiwibank. “If you go out a decade, then I would expect the banking business to be about the same size as the traditional core businesses of NZ Post,” said Allen, a former head of the letters division. “We have seen continued growth in letter volume, but how long that will be the case is the significant question that confronts all postal businesses,” said the 42-year-old, who took over at NZ Post last month.

John Allen appointed CEO New Zealand Post

John Allen, currently Acting Chief Executive of New Zealand Post, has been appointed Chief Executive, Chairman Rt Hon Jim Bolger announced today. Mr Bolger said the appointment completed a four-month long international search that attracted over 90 applications. “A shortlist of five candidates from New Zealand and overseas was interviewed by a Board sub-committee. Their recommendation to appoint Mr Allen received unanimous support from a meeting of the full New Zealand Post Board today in Wellington.
