DHL Innovation project wins RFID Journal Award 2007

The pilot project “temperature-monitored pharmaceutical logistics with RFID” conducted by the DHL Innovation Initiative was honored with the “RFID Journal Award 2007” at the congress “RFID Journal LIVE: Putting RFID to Work” (held from April 30 through May 2, 2007, in Orlando, Florida). The RFID application developed by DHL in cooperation with the innovation partners IBM and Infratab was nominated in the category “Best Use of RFID in a Service.”

Today’s pharmaceutical products generally consist of temperature-sensitive ingredients that can lose their effectiveness when they are placed in an environment that is too cold or too hot. The DHL Innovation Initiative developed an inventive solution to monitor temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products during transport. RFID sensor tags made by the development partner Infratab monitor the temperature of pharmaceutical shipments. The stored measurement data can be read by a RFID reader without physical contact using radio waves. In the process, the shipment does not have to be opened. The link to the database is handled by solutions created by IBM, one of the global innovation partners of the DHL Innovation Initiative. Thanks to the new service, pharmaceutical companies can react to temperatures that exceed or fall below limits even while the shipment is still being transported.

Window Book announces Postage Statement Form Filler™:

Window Book, Inc., has announced the launch of ‘Postage Statement Form Filler’, an easy and cost-effective mailing solution for quickly producing printed USPS Postage Statements.

Due to the Postage Rate changes, the US Postal Service will not be maintaining its Postage Statement Wizard after May 14th, 2007. Window Book’s Postage Statement Form Filler allows users to easily create the Postage Statements they were creating with the Postage Statement Wizard. The new Postage Statement Form Filler will generate the following statements for processing your mailings: 3602-R, 3602-N, 3541, and 8125s. In addition, it enables you to edit your statements, and maintain a database by job, permit and client.

This product provides a perfect solution for those who have been using USPS Postage Statement Wizard Online Forms. With the implementation of R2006-1rate case, you will no longer be able to fill out postage statements via Postage Statement Wizard Forms after May 14, 2007. Mailers will have to use either PostalOne!®, or will have to manually fill out the forms. Filling in these forms by hand can be tedious, time consuming, and lends itself to human error.

The US Postal Service saved by two Turks

Caglar Gogus and Hamit Hamutcu are two young management consultants. The U.S. Postal Service had been losing USD 2 billion a year up until 2001.When the duo were hired, the consultants developed a new business model for the firm, helping it to earn a profit of USD 800 million a year. Restructuring the postal service, which has the status of an autonomous public organization, the duo even managed to have a ruling passed in the United States Congress so that the organization can be freed of its current structure and assume a new identity. With this restructuring, the firm has been able to gain back market share it had lost to giants such as FedEx and UPS. It now operates on the business model that the two consultants have developed in 40,000 locations through the United States.

Stating that they have founded their project on a multi-legged strategy, Hamutçu says the two most important elements were competitiveness and increasing market share in prominent categories. Stating that they have found the postal service to be under attack on a number of different fronts.

Hamutcu explains that due to this reason they switched to a customer-based approach from a product-based approach. They have put in practice a number of projects, ranging from renovating call centers to establishing new sales teams for different client groups, from training thousands of postmen to conducting field research about client needs and the situation of the competition, says the consultant. He explains that one of their most substantial projects was the innovation they have brought to the pricing strategy.
