Canada Post vows to deliver modernization

Canada Post will invest billions of dollars to modernize its postal plants across the country in coming years, says president and CEO Moya Greene.
“We need to look at capital renewal in our company,” Greene told the Vancouver Board of Trade in a recent speech. “Our plant equipment is nearly 40 years old.”
The capital-renewal program is the first of three challenges facing the Crown corporation, she added, along with more “fully” engaging its workforce of 71,000 people, and improving its focus on the customer.
Greene said Canada Post’s management team is now “building the platform” for the next 25 years, and is looking at expanding its traditional networks.

Royal Mail's PIP awareness campaign 'successful'

The GBP 10m ad campaign Royal Mail ran this summer to tell the public it was changing the way it charges for mail delivery has resulted in 84% awareness of the new pricing structure, according to research from Postwatch, the body representing postal customers.
Ad agency Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and its sister below-the-line agency Proximity London created the campaign, which ran around Pricing in Proportion’s introduction on August 21.
Independent telephone research conducted on Postwatch’s behalf showed 84% of those interviewed were aware of PIP. Postwatch, which has not been afraid to criticise Royal Mail in the past, said this showed the campaign was “successful”.
However, the research also revealed discontent among vulnerable customers with the new prices with 87% of the elderly, rural dwellers and those on low income believing they are now paying more for their post.

The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. offer holiday shipping expertise

When it comes to shipping holiday gifts, there really is a “naughty” way and a “nice” way to do it. And after 26 years in the packing and shipping business, the pros at The UPS Store® and Mail Boxes Etc.® have seen some fairly “naughty” packages in their day.

“Although people have the best of intentions, we have to perform a number of ‘interventions’ each year,” says The UPS Store franchisee Willa Levin of Royal Oak, Mich.

Levin recommends the following tips for ensuring your package is delivered in “nice” condition:

Get a good start by using a new box specifically designed for shipping, not moving. Dumpster diving for old boxes is a fast trip to the naughty list.

Follow through by using the right packing materials, including a minimum of two inches of bubble cushioning and/or packing peanuts. Old clothes, crumpled newspaper and real popcorn aren’t only naughty, they’re nasty.

Before closing the box, place an extra mailing label inside just in case the outside label gets damaged. Hint: Santa appreciates good penmanship.

Add the finishing touch with clear, professional-grade packing tape and a fresh label with both the sender’s and recipient’s names clearly printed. Sorry fellas, duct tape will land you at the top of the naughty list. Packages wrapped in paper or tied with string also are a no-no.

If you’re looking to score bonus points, use UPS® so you can track your packages. Then you’ll know someone was home to receive your gifts. It’s a nice thing to do.

Cargo jets carry some risks along with shipments – Group boosts effort to educate senders about unsafe packages

A woman walked into Bruce Bernstein’s Pompano Beach, Fla., parcel shipping store with a box that she said had to arrive before July 4th. Inside were 28 pounds of fireworks, bottle rockets and illegal, high-powered firecrackers known as M-80s.

“It would have taken down a plane no problem,” says Bernstein, recalling an incident from two summers ago that underscores the difficulties private shippers have with keeping hazardous materials off planes.

The Associated Mail and Parcel Centers, which represents over 3,000 small shipping centers, estimates that each year thousands of packages like this one slip unnoticed onto planes all over the USA. The leading industry trade group and the government have stepped up efforts to educate the public about shipping flammable goods.

The rapid growth in shipments has made it increasingly difficult to police what goes into packages that crisscross the nation, the association says. Its members are small stores that pack items and funnel packages to the large shipping companies. They handle 29 million packages a year.
