eBay proves virtual gold mine for Postal Service

Carol Johnson, of Centennial, laughs loudly when asked by telephone how she ships the products she sells on eBay.
“That’s what I’m doing right now,” she says.
“Fifteen of my items ended (their auctions) last night, and I’m wrapping them up.”
Johnson, as it turns out, is the quintessential eBay seller: She ships mostly via the U.S. Postal Service but uses United Parcel Service and Federal Express on occasion, especially for large items.
eBay has been a boon to shipping companies, expanding business for the likes of the Postal Service, UPS, FedEx and others.
Says eBay spokeswoman Catherine England: “We’re definitely a big contributor” to the U.S. package shipment industry.
The U.S. Postal Service is the clear shipper of choice and that’s helped resuscitate a flagging mail- delivery operation.
Postmaster General John Potter says eBay shippers have generated more than USD1 billion of postage since the two started working closely together more than two years ago.
“We’re huge with them, and we appreciate being with them,” says Al DeSarro, the Colorado spokesman for the Postal Service.

USPS reiterates CASS/DPV plan

The U.S. Postal Service reminded mailers Nov. 2 that beginning in August mail pieces will receive CASS-related discounts only when the agency’s delivery point validation process confirms the primary number — or the first line — of the addresses.
Jan Caldwell, manager of address management at USPS, reminded attendees at the quarterly Mailers Technical Advisory Committee meeting here at postal headquarters that the new system will improve addressing for mailers and the postal service by eliminating the need to manually process the mail because of incorrect primary numbers.
“Over 348 million pieces of mail are returned or wasted as a result of incorrect or missing primary numbers at an annual cost to USPS of USD60 million,” Ms. Caldwell said.

U.S. Postal Service awards Siemens major contract

Siemens announced that it has been awarded a USD109.4 million contract modification from the United States Postal Service (USPS) for additional mail sorting equipment. The scope of the award encompasses an additional 211 Delivery Bar Code Sorter (DBCS 6) machines to expand USPS’ existing fleet of letter sorting equipment. The company will provide installation and associated integrated logistics support services for the new machines in addition to carts used to transport trays of sorted mail. Production and installation of the DBCS 6 order is expected to be completed by Dec.1, 2007. The DBCS is the most widely deployed mail processing platform for letters within the Postal Service with more than 2000 machines operating nationwide. Almost every letter will pass through these machines several times as it makes its way through the postal network. Need for the additional equipment is driven by the 2 million delivery points, comprising U.S. households and businesses, which the Postal Service will be adding to its service over the next year.
