The inexorable rise of e-mail is putting the strain on the Amercian postal
service USPS, which is considering reducing its delivery service from six to
five days a week. In a statement before the House of Representatives earlier
this month, William Henderson, the postmaster general, blamed the “explosive
growth in commmunications technology” for USPS’ difficulties

United Parcel Service Inc.said on Thursday its first-quarter operating earnings fell 14 percent, and warned that second-quarter profits would be at the low end of estimates due to the weakened economy.

UAL, the parent company of United, reported a net loss of $313m, or $5.97 per share, in the first three months of the year, compared with a loss of $99m last year. Delta, meanwhile, reported a loss of $133m, or $1.11 per share, compared with a profit of $216m in the same quarter last year.
