US: Tax rebate leads more to file returns

Internal Revenue Service representatives said Monday 14th April they were expecting an increase in the number of tax returns filed this year.

The rise is due largely to an extra incentive — being one of the 130 million Americans expected to receive a federally funded rebate intended to encourage increased spending and stimulate the nation’s economy.

The IRS will use tax returns to determine eligibility and assess the amount a person receives, with single filers getting up to USD 600, and couples up to USD 1,200, plus USD 300 per dependent child.

Increased volume this time of year is nothing new for the U.S. Postal Service, which expects to handle around 59 million federal tax returns this year, or 43 percent of all individual returns filed.

Despite the increase of electronic filing in recent years, this year’s overall rise in filings is expected to also raise the number of mailed returns over last year by 3 percent, according to Tim Ratliff, postal service spokesman for the Northern Illinois district.

“Obviously, there is an increase of people filing electronically for all sorts of reasons,” he said. “At the same time, there is still a huge percentage of people that still depend on the postal service to mail their tax returns.”

And as in the past, Ratliff encourages people to file as early as possible but said the postal service has managed to adapt in order to accommodate one of the more exasperating traits in human nature.

Earth Class Mail Expands Markets, Hires Key Personnel, Grows Sales and Customer Base

Earth Class Mail Corp. announced the most successful quarter in its four-year history, highlighted by key additions to its management team, a successful financing round and record sales growth.

Earth Class Mail is the only online postal-mail delivery service for individuals and businesses that scales to meet the needs of national posts. The company recently opened its first retail storefront in Seattle, with more planned for New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., among other major U.S. cities. Two additional mail-processing “hub” facilities will be constructed in Kansas and Virginia to augment the company’s 60,000-sq-ft. facility in Oregon.

Earth Class Mail has seen increased interest from U.S. governmental and military branches, as well as privatized foreign postal operators seeking new technologies to expand revenue-generating services, lower operating costs, and reduce environmental impact.

Executive appointments include Carl Hicks, COO; Rajeev Dujari, VP of Product Management; Phil Sprute, VP of Enterprise Sales; Steve Isaac, Principal Product Manager; and Robert Gilbert, Director of Sales Engineering.

Earth Class Mail just completed a pilot implementation with a Fortune 100 company which is being rolled-out to 20,000 additional employees this year, and 35,000 more in 2009 – making it the first major corporation to deliver postal mail electronically to all its employees. By increasing productivity and operational efficiency, Earth Class Mail can help the company save millions of dollars per year in mail- and paper-handling, real estate, and administrative labor costs.

Co-operative Financial Services signs GBP 12m green mail deal

Co-operative Financial Services (CFS) has signed a GBP 12m deal with Xerox to improve customer service and reduce its environmental impact through a new mail distribution system.

The new automated system, which will deal with more than 10,000 postal items per day, will process, catalogue and route all inbound insurance and retail banking correspondence.

Using language recognition technology, business-critical information will be distributed to recipients electronically.

Over time, Xerox will manage all of CFS’s General Insurance and banking documents, and will provide an integrated enterprise distribution/work management environment.

Based on Xerox’s DocuShare technology, this will enable CFS to handle all information electronically. CFS will be able to standardise its inbound communications, create faster customer response times and ensure that more accurate and timely information is both sent and received.

Dick Parkhouse, executive director for strategy and change at CFS, said, “CFS is committed to building a sustainable and efficient business. By adhering to the highest ethical standards, reducing our waste wherever possible and curtailing our energy usage, we will significantly increase our capability and credentials.”
