Norway Post steps up logistics growth plan

Norway’s main postal operator Norway Post has kick-started plans to expand its logistics operations by implementing a Transport Management System from RedPrairie.

The E2eTM system will replace the company’s custom legacy applications and will centralise transport planning and management to help improve carrier management.
The system is designed to automate transport operations and improve visibility of order fulfilment in real-time, while connecting multiple parties and business processes throughout the broader supply chain.
The system will be worked across the businesses in the Norway Post Logistics Group which includes Bring Frigoscandia, Bring Logistics and Bring Express.

The company is now looking to extend the system to Distribution Net, the logistics arm of the postal business.

Logistics and ICT ensure growth in Norway Post

Acquisitions and an increase in volume in the Logistics and ICT segments led to the operating revenues for the first three quarters of 2008 increasing by 7 percent compared to the same period in 2007. The total operating revenues came to NOK 20.8 billion.

The combined operating revenues increased by NOK 1.4 billion, of which acquired companies contributed MNOK 721 (53 percent) while the Group’s organic growth contributed MNOK 679 (47 percent).

The Group’s earnings before non-recurring items and impairment losses (EBITE) as at 30 September 2008 came to MNOK 345, a reduction from the MNOK 414 on the same date in 2007. This reduction is mainly due to lower volumes of mail advertising and banking transactions, a change in the mix of letter products, increased personnel and transport costs and the investment in the new brand. The EBIT from logistics and ICT operations increased.

”The Group’s ICT and Logistics segments have grown and their earnings have increased, while the Post segment is affected by a decline in volume and increased personnel and transport costs which cannot be compensated for by corresponding increases in the revenues,” says Group CEO Dag Mejdell.

Posten Logistik expands in Finland

Posten Logistik is now taking one more step towards realizing its Nordic strategy. Through the partnership with the Finnish travel and transport company Matkahuolto, a distribution network for parcels is established in Finland. Thereby Posten Logistik is strengthening its ability to harness the increasing international flows of goods both to and within the Nordic countries.

The logistics flows to, from and within the Nordic region are growing heavily, largely due to the fact that private individuals are increasingly ordering goods via the Internet and post order. At the same time, companies’ home markets are expanding. Companies with customers in several Nordic countries want to run their businesses without having to consider the country borders, and they are requesting cross-border, cost-efficient, and complete solutions to an ever-greater degree.

The expansion of the MyPack concept to Finland is an important step in Posten Logistik’s strategy to become a strong Nordic logistics company. In September 2007 it acquired the Finnish company Suomen Logistiikkatalo Oy, operative in the third-party logistics and inventory management areas. In 2007, Posten Logistik also established a network of over 600 pick-up points in Norway. In 2008, it acquired the entire Norwegian company Tollpost Globe, which had its own infrastructure and nationwide distribution in Norway.
