The Association of Pallet Networks

In the UK, the pallet service providers will be represented by their own dedicated industry body–the Association of Pallet Networks (APN, www.eyefortransport.com).

Formed at the end of last year, the APN has attracted membership from eight pallet networks in the UK: Palletforce, Palletways, Pall-Ex, Fortec, Palletline, United Pallet Network, Palletrack and The Pallet Network.

Together, these members represent more than 620 haulers, 24,000 vehicles and 11 million square feet of warehouse space.

The APN aims to raise awareness of the pallet network sector and to represent the interests of its members in the transport sector with media and government.

It provides a platform for discussion, analysis and the promotion of the pallet network sector to customers, prospective customers, network members and the public sector.

The APN has appointed logistics consultants to set up a detailed study of the sector, using on-line benchmarking to collect and collate information across the sector.

One of the first commercial tasks of the new body was to represent its members on the Countdown Forum for the 2012 Olympic Games, where it presented a detailed analysis of the advantages of using the pallet network approach to support the logistics of the Olympic Games.

Pallet networks are essentially co-operative organizations made up of groups of individual haulers who collect and deliver palletized freight in their own geographical area, consolidating loads destined for other parts of the country and Europe and trunking to a central hub for onward distribution. This significantly increases average vehicle fill, which, for pallet networks, is around 73%, compared with a national average of 51%.

Pall-Ex Director Recognised as a Mentor for Women of the Future

Hilary Devey, MD of Pall-Ex is a known force throughout the UK for inspiring women in the workplace. Now one of Mrs Devey’s Senior Management Team, Tony Mellor, has received a prestigious accolade in recognition of this shared vision.
Hilary’s entrepreneurial idea to begin a pallet network over ten years ago came as a shock initially to an industry dominated by men. Her business ideas and gender broke the mould for the transport industry and lead to the creation of an enterprise which now celebrates over ten years of success.
Now the award winning company Hilary created which employs male and female lorry drivers, and male and female fork lift truck drivers has been recognised independently yet again for inspiring women in the workplace. Tony Mellor, Commercial Director of Pall-Ex, has been inspired by Hilary’s example to encourage young women of potential, and his work has gained him a shortlisting as a finalist in the Women of the Future Awards. The category for which Tony has been recognised is entitled ‘Mentor of the Year’, a title which Mr Mellor well deserves for his efforts. Tony joined the company as Marketing Manager in 2004, and his skills and experience were soon recognised, the more potential he showed, the more responsibility he was entrusted with. He now overseas numerous departments, including direct management of 3 Executive level women of great potential for the future.
Tony has to undergo one more round of judging, before a gala awards ceremony to be held in London in November.

Logistics can give environmental lead says Pall-Ex

Pall-Ex claims the haulage industry can set an example to other sectors in protecting the environment. Tony Mellor, senior commercial manager at the pallet network, says it is constantly looking for new ways to improve its environmental performance and has already implemented a range of positive steps. “Pall-Ex operates a fleet of forklift trucks powered by environmentally-friendly comp-ressed natural gas, reducing polluting emissions to an absolute minimum,” Mellor explains.

Mounted barcode scanners have recently been fitted to the entire forklift truck fleet, with a view to reduction of paper used for pallet processing checks through the hub. We also recycle wood from broken pallets. “Everyone in logistics could be looking at introducing these types of improvements, and the [haulage] industry could set an example to other sectors,” he states.

Meanwhile, the company recently celebrated handling its 12-millionth pallet since it started in 1996. Renata Jones, Pall-Ex spokeswoman, adds: “The company is incredibly proud to achieve such a phenomenal level of pallet throughput in our tenth year of business.”
