Allan Leighton, interim chairman of Consignia, is preparing for a head-on battle with Postcomm, the newly formed Post Office regulator. Leighton is writing a strongly worded attack to Graham Corbett, Postcomm chairman, stating that proposals to open up the network to competitors are unworkable and could cause Consignia’s financial collapse.

Consignia to cut 30,000 jobs in drive for mail efficiency

Consignia is to reveal detailed plans within three weeks to shed up to 30,000 jobs. The redundancy programme will lead to one of the biggest culls of middle management in British corporate history. Up to 10,000 “suits” are expected to lose their jobs as part of the shake-up. The board believes that huge savings can be achieved by stripping away layers of “inefficient” middle management.

Doorstep deliveries will not be scrapped

Consignia insisted yesterday that door-to-door deliveries, the traditional cornerstone of the service, are safe, despite growing speculation that plans are being hatched to scrap the service. A spokesman stressed concern over the future of the doorstep delivery service was unfounded and also said there were no plans to sell-off its loss-making Parcelforce delivery operation.

Parcelforce faces the chop

Parcelforce, the delivery business run Consignia, will have to close if its losses are not stemmed within 12 to 18 months, senior executives have warned. They say that all but the operations it is forced to carry out to fulfil its commitments to provide a universal service would be shut unless the losses – expected to reach £200 million by the end of the year – are turned around by spring 2003.
