Pitney Bowes enters US personalized postage market with Zazzle alliance

Pitney Bowes Inc. today announced it is launching a customized postage service through a new alliance with Zazzle, the Internet’s leading customized products marketplace. The new service allows customers to create full-color customized stamps using images they upload at the Zazzle website, or a vast collection of images already available on the site, including famous characters from The Walt Disney Company and other special collections. The alliance calls for Pitney Bowes, the world’s leading provider of integrated mailing solutions, to provide the software that manages the postage transaction between the customer and the United States Postal Service.

Pitney Bowes acquires Danka Canada

Pitney Bowes Inc., one of the world’s largest makers of postal equipment, on Friday said it acquired all the outstanding stock of Danka Canada Inc. for about USD14 million. Danka Canada’s parent, Danka Business Systems PLC, said separately that it sold the unit because it has not been profitable, posting a loss of USD7.7 million on USD35.9 million in sales for the latest fiscal year ended March 31.

Opinion: Postal metering can overcome VAT hurdles

With the election being centre stage right now, the new VAT proposals for postal services may have slipped under many people’s radar, but they are set to have a huge impact on 1m European businesses.

Amid the excitement of impending deregulation, emerging private postal operators are lobbying the European Commission, postal regulators and national governments with a view to removing the VAT exemption currently available to the universal service providers. The private postal operators believe that they currently do not operate on a level playing field with Europe’s postal incumbents, as private companies must charge VAT on all products and services.

With an estimated £6.95bn (EUR10bn) of European postal revenue collected through the meter channel and more than 1m mailers using franking machines across Europe, the technical issues associated with collecting VAT through the meter channel must be seriously addressed by policy makers.

Michael J. Critelli, chairman and CEO of Pitney Bowes Inc. told a group of financial analysts this week that the company’s growth in 2005 and beyond will stem from creating and building multiple and diverse growth platforms within the mail and document management market place, rather than a single or handful of very large opportunities.
