Mail remains vital to business today, says Pitney Bowes

Michael J. Critelli, chairman and CEO of Pitney Bowes Inc. affirmed that, “contrary to the predictions of a paperless environment, mail remains a vital piece of the business communications flow,” during a presentation at Solomon Smith Barney today.

Critelli noted that there are more than 425 billion pieces of mail generated annually around the world, and 200 billion in the U.S. alone. “The mailing industry in the U.S. is a $900 billion industry that drives over eight percent of the GDP annually. Organizations understand the power of mail to exchange critical information, products and payments with their important stakeholders and, compared with other forms of marketing, businesses and non-profits can reach out to prospects in a non-intrusive manner.” He also mentioned that, though no one can predict the future of mail as a communications tool for organizations, “Pitney Bowes expects to have great growth opportunities in mail for a very long time, regardless of business mail volume trends, given the massive size of the mailing industry worldwide.”

Royal Mail partner denies competition claim

The Royal Mail’s claim that it is suffering from the introduction of competition has been undermined by Pitney Bowes, one of the mail operator’s main commercial partners. Pitney Bowes, the company that invented the franking machine and handles 20 per cent of UK mail sent each day, says Royal Mail’s position is unlikely to be affected by competition. It said the operator was unlikely to lose much market share to rivals in the next three years and might even benefit from the introduction of competition in mail markets. The comments undermine complaints by Allan Leighton, chairman of Royal Mail, that the postal regulator has jeopardised Royal Mail’s three-year restructuring plan by introducing too much competition too fast.

UK Royal Mail – Pitney Bowes joint venture targets mailing

Pitney Bowes has teamed up with Royal Mail to offer an outsourced document management service to large-volume direct mailers. The management services division of Pitney Bowes (PBMS) was approached by Royal Mail 12 months ago to develop a broader range of document services from ‘data to doorstep’. RMPB (Royal Mail Pitney Bowes) was then set up to target Royal Mail’s customer base, specifically its larger blue-chip clients. PBMS is run as an independent division of Pitney Bowes, added Bailey, and would not encroach on its mailing line manufacturing.
