Poste Italiane net profit at 236 mln Euro 2004

Italian state-owned postal services company Poste Italiane SpA registered a consolidated net profit of 236 mln euro (USD310.8 mln) for 2004, compared to 90.3 mln euro (USD118.9 mln) for 2003. Poste Italiane’s net profit stood at 21.6 mln euro (USD28.4 mln) in 2002. The company’s earning before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 56.7 pct to1. 8 bln euro (USD2.37 bln). Operating profit dropped by 82 pct to 796.4 mln euro (USD1.048 bln). Turnover amounted to over 9.0 bln euro (USD11.851 bln).

Italian post office strengthens ties with France

The Italian post office, Poste Italiane, saw its mail volume rise by 10 per cent last year, to 7.2 billion items. At the same time, there was a double-digit increase in mail revenues, owing to growth in the most profitable segments of the market, such as direct marketing and commercial post. Poste Italiane has now decided to forge closer links with its French counterpart, La Poste, by making its unit-linked life assurance policies available in French post offices. At the same time, it has raised its stake in Aspheria, its joint-venture with La Poste, to 40 per cent.

Poste Italiane to register positive 2004 results

Chairman of Italian state-owned postal services company Poste Italiane Enzo Cardi said on January 21, 2005 that the company would post positive results for 2004, in compliance with the forecasts.

Cardi added that the 2004 financial results will be examined by the board of directors soon and they will be quite flattering for the company. He declined to comment on the future privatisation of the company.

The announcement was made during the presentation of a stamp for the 100th aniversary of the Italian vehicle assistance company Automobile Club d’Italia.

Poste Italiane hikes Special Delivery prices by 9.0 Pct

Italian state-owned postal services company Poste Italiane has raised the prices of the special deliveries by 9. 0 pct, it was reported on January 13, 2004. The rise was due to the higher costs of the company and the improved quality of the services. The price of the special delivery of a letter in one day increased to 8.5 euro (USD11.3) from 8.0 euro (USD10.6). The special delivery of a parcel in one day went up to 13 euro (USD17.2) from 12 euro (USD15.9), while the price of a parcel consigned in three days rose to 8.0 euro from 7.0 euro (USD9.3). Recently Poste Italiane has raised the prices of the ordinary parcels to 7.0 euro from 5.16 euro (USD6.8).

Interview with Massimo Sarmi, MD of Poste Italiane

According to Massimo Sarmi, managing director of Poste Italiane, the Italian national postal services group is ahead of its two main European competitors, the Dutch and German post offices, in terms of operating profit this year. Mr Sarmi also said that the group’s operating profit for the full-year 2004 would be positive, based on its results to the end of September. While Mr Sarmi said that the group was ready for a stock market listing, he added that it was up to the government to decide if and when the operation would take place.
