UK Companies set to benefit from changes early next year

Joe Public is unlikely to see a change in the price of sending a letter as a result of yesterday’s decision. The postmen and women delivering mail will not change either, although much of the post they will be carrying will soon no longer bear the Royal Mail name. But businesses could benefit from the changes as early as next year if a low access price encourages, as Postcomm predicts, the development of new services and competition over existing ones. Postwatch, the consumer watchdog said: “Access to the Royal Mail pipeline, could in time, grow the size of the overall market – again, good news for customers.”

Minister delivers rural funding for N Ireland post offices

Ulster’s struggling rural post offices were yesterday given a cash boost of GBP750,000. Consumer watchdog, Postwatch Northern Ireland, said the funding was “a much needed boost for post offices in deprived areas”.

Royal Mail plans to charge marketers around 68p per insert, with further negotiations for bulk mailings. Postwatch says it has not been notified about the new service and is unimpressed with the move.

The prospect of Royal Mail paying a hefty fine for anti-competitive behaviour receded yesterday after the Office of Fair Trading decided not to investigate a “super complaint” brought against the operator by Postwatch, the consumer watchdog, last month. The OFT referred the complaint to Postcomm, the regulator, meaning the issues raised “no longer have the status of a super-complaint”, Royal Mail said. Under the Enterprise Act, yet to come into full force, Postcomm is not empowered to deal with the complaint in such a way.
