UK Royal Mail price increase postpone

Royal Mail today advised customers that the postal price increase proposed from April 17 will be postponed because of a decision by the regulator, Postcomm, to extend the consultation period for price control. Postcomm has delayed the deadline for the consultation period to March 21, following representations from the consumer body Postwatch. Royal Mail had previously announced April 17 as the proposed date for its increases, subject to agreement with the regulator on the price control package, but there will now be no change to prices of any Royal Mail services on that date.

Royal Mail angry over watchdog's bill

Royal Mail is believed to be furious at the explosion of costs at Postwatch, the consumer watchdog that it is forced to fund.

It paid GBP7m last year for the organisation, which in turn spent over GBP350,000 on furniture, GBP600,000 on computer equipment and a staggering GBP462,000 on entertaining, subsistence and travel. Its predecessor, the Post Office User’s National Council (POUNC), spent under GBP800,000 in a year.

Royal Mail fails one in four

Customers in a quarter of all postcode areas continue to receive a below minimum postal service, with less than 90% of their first class mail being delivered the next day, even when posted in the same postcode, according to figures published by Royal Mail today. Commenting on the figures, Peter Carr, Chairman of Postwatch said; “It is good news that Royal Mail’s overall performance for first class mail has improved but this cannot disguise the fact that a quarter of all postcodes, many in densely populated urban areas,
are receiving a substandard service.

Postcomm publishes its standard postal licence

Postcomm today published the terms and conditions for the new standard postal
licence. This implements the decision, announced on 29 May 2002, to allow
rival operators to provide long-term mail services in competition with Royal Mail Group. The new licence will come into operation from I January 2003 and will have a minimum life of seven years. Up to now, with the exception of Royal Mail, all postal operators have been restricted to interim licences of a minimum of 12 months’ duration.

MPs debate post office closures

MPs are to debate the proposed closure of up to 3,000 urban post offices. The government plans to make £210m available to compensate subpostmasters for the cost of closures, and to improve the remaining post offices.
