Tunnel rail link must allow for freight too

The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) has refuted suggestions that the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) is not giving enough priority to freight services.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) claimed that a consultation paper produced by the SRA on the use of the CTRL only refers to freight usage of the link on one page out of 28.

UK Government forcing more freight off rail and on to the roads

The Government is in jeopardy of forcing even more freight off rail and on to the roads with its latest proposals for Railtrack’s replacement, according to the country’s largest freight operator. EWS, which employs 6,000 people, has told rail regulator Tom Winsor that it is “extremely disturbed” by some of Network Rail’s plans. In a letter to Mr Winsor, EWS says that “the new structure of the industry discriminates against freight operators and rail freight”.

Royal Mail trains to Glasgow are to be scrapped after 132 years on the tracks

Royal Mail trains which carry overnight sorting offices to Glasgow are to be scrapped next year. The cost-cutting move will bring to an end to more than 130 years of history and affect almost 80 staff who work on the travelling post offices (TPOs). Staff who man the 132-year-old mail train service fear they will lose their jobs as a result. And they are also concerned that the move will mean a reduced service for customers.
