Overnight parcel service to bring huge increase in Highland rail freight traffic

Vital rail freight traffic in the Highlands is set to increase substantially at the end of this month, when freight operator EWS introduces a new overnight express parcel service from Walsall, in the Midlands, to Inverness. The private freight company’s initiative follows a similar experimental “supply and demand” service introduced last summer, which ended in December, when the needs of its original customers changed. EWS spokesman Graham Meiklejohn said Securicor was its main customer for the new service, but the freight company planned to expand, and was actively seeking other business.
