An Post invests euro 1.6m in parcel plant expansion

A new euro 1.6m extension to An Post’s national parcel processing facility at Portlaoise Mails Centre was officially opened today by Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey.

More than 20,000 parcels are processed at the Portlaoise hub each day, comprising parcel mail posted in Dublin and Leinster, as well as all incoming international parcels.

The 9000 sq ft extension to the mails centre brings to 43,000 sq ft the space devoted exclusively to parcel processing, an operation which involves tariff checking, barcoding, customs clearance (for international items) and sorting for onward dispatch and delivery.

“With globalisation, liberalisation and developments in technology, all national postal operators including An Post, have to change very rapidly to stay competitive and commercial in the postal market,” said Mr Dempsey.

Irish Postmasters reject Fortis

An Post’s new banking joint venture with Fortis is facing uncertainty following a decision by the postmasters’ union not to work on the new project.

The Irish Postmasters’ Union said it took the decision because agreement could not be found on improved payments for transacting existing An Post business.

In addition, the union said the company’s failure to make any long-term commitment about volumes of social welfare and other State business and the payments to IPU members for operating these functions had also contributed to the impasse.

It said it would not undertake any new work for An Post, including the implementation and operation of the new Fortis banking project, until the issue had been resolved.

Fortis to duplicate Belgian success with An Post joint venture

Having gained ten years of experience working with the state-owned Belgian post office, Fortis has finalised an agreement with the Irish post office An Post to create a similar financial services joint venture in Ireland.

The agreement with An Post is part of Fortis’s strategy to expand internationally, particularly in recognised European growth markets such as Ireland, Russia and Germany.

The two organisations are creating a new retail bank, which will be a 50/50 partnership between them, and will have an initial capital of 112 million (euro). Fortis will pay 56 million (euro) in cash and An Post will contribute the balance.

Under the agreement, An Post will provide Fortis with access to its network of 1,400 post office branches, while the latter will contribute its international experience in bancassurance.

An Post chiefs step down in huge shake-up

An Post has parted company with its chief operating officer, Larry Donald, and commercial director, Derek Kickham. Both were former ESB managers and had been brought in by the former chief executive Donal Curtin, also from the ESB, three years ago to head his controversial overhaul of the postal group.

Donald has already left the company and Kickham is expected to depart within the next few months. Both their titles have been scrapped under a new organisational structure announced last week by Donal Connell, who replaced Curtin in early July.

The sales and marketing, and retail operations managers, who until now have reported to Kickham, have become part of the group’s top line of management — answerable to Connell.
