Stamp of approval for Irish postal revolution

EVERY address in Ireland will soon have its own unique postcode under a radical new mail system.

Minister for Communications Noel Dempsey is examining two reports from ComReg which analyse the feasibility and cost benefit of introducing postcodes in Ireland.

The Minister described the results as positive and made no secret of his desire to introduce postcodes to Ireland as soon as possible.

He believes it will speed up deliveries and is vital as the number of new homes in the country continues to grow. Mr Dempsey said: “Every country in the civilised world has postcodes.

Open mind for An Post

AN Post has rejected claims it is closing post offices across the country.

The Labour Party claimed the number of outlets has dropped to just 1,295 over the past six years.

But An Post said 1,545 remain open – a reduction of 369 that would decrease as some offices reopen.

A spokeswoman added some new offices were being opened in growing suburban areas.

DX Ireland postpones plan for postal service

DX Ireland, which was considering starting a postal delivery service to rival An Post, has postponed the idea until after the postal market is fully liberalised, saying it is not financially viable.

Under the terms of existing legislation, any newcomer to the postal market has to charge 2.5 times the 48 cent charged by State postal operator An Post for all items under 50g.

French deliver E18m for new Interlink facility

La Poste France, the French post office, is investing E18m to build a distribution hub for Interlink, an Irish company that is owned by the French operator. The firm aims to fill the void created by the closure last year of An Post’s loss-making SDS parcel-delivery service.

The 70,000-sq-ft sorting facility near Athlone, will double the delivery capacity for Interlink, which expects to generate revenues of E40m this year and make more than 15m drops.
