Irish An Post and staff at odds over future

Arcane trade union practices are threatening An Post’s potentially profitable bulk mail business, according to company management.

Direct marketing mail increased by 22 per cent last year, as traditional postal services declined.

Last week, An Post began an investigation into the dumping of bulk mail in a ditch by postal staff in Co Meath.

The company’s commercial director, DerekKickham, said it was not an isolated incident and indicated a need for workers to undergo a mindset change’. But Sean McDonagh, of the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU), said only one postal worker had been sacked for dumping mail in the past year.

An Post dismisses critical union report as ‘out of date’

An Post hit back yesterday at a report warning of a “graveyard decline” at the company, claiming much of its data was highly selective and out of date.

The report, drawn up by the firm’s group of unions, branded management style “obsolete” and confrontational and warned that An Post’s pricing policy could create an irreversible spiral of decline in mail volumes and revenue.

An Post said it needed a price rise and changes in working practices if it was to progress. A spokesperson said despite a rise in the number of households, real mail volumes were down by a quarter since 2001.

An Post had been discussing work practices and costs in the Labour Court for the last 18 months, a process nearing conclusion.

Changes in work practices, flexibility and 1,500 job cuts were needed. Once achieved, An Post could grow as a reliable service.

Irish An Post branded the ‘worst in Europe’ by report

A damning indictment of An Post is revealed in a major new report which warns of the “graveyard decline” of the company if it fails to follow a new vision for its future. The report brands An Post’s company management style as “obsolete” and confrontational and warns that its current pricing policy could create an irreversible spiral of decline in mail volumes and revenue.
The report, ‘An Post – A New Vision’, which was commissioned by the company’s group of unions, says An Post had presided over a continuing decline in mail volumes at a time when there was ample evidence that postal services in other EU countries were enjoying strong growth. And it added An Post’s service was amongst the worst quality in Europe. Calling for changes in work practices, the report also hits out at An Post’s “conflict evoking” management style, which it says belonged to another era.

TPN looks to raise volume

The Pallet Network says it is to focus on developing its European operations this year and next, but that it will not attempt to keep up with its rivals’ increasingly complex information technology. Managing director Adam Leonard, speaking at the new hub at Rugby to which the company relocated in January, said the network is in talks with potential partners based in Germany, France and Switzerland. It recently launched TPN Ireland and already has a service to Benelux. Leonard said the network moves around 3,500 pallets a night. “Growth will be controlled by the members but we would like to achieve 4,500 pallets by the end of the year,” he says.

An Post suffers setback on stamp price rise

An Post has suffered a significant setback with a decision on its controversial stamp price increase application not now expected for several months. The regulator, ComReg, has requested further information from An Post to support the application it submitted 11 months ago. An Post will shortly report a small surplus but the delay in granting a price increase for stamps could have financial repercussions. Last May, when the application was submitted, An Post chief executive Donal Curtin said the company believed it was entitled to a “realistic” price increase. While never disclosed publicly, it is understood the company sought an increase of 14.5 per cent. This would push up the price of a stamp from 48 to 55 cent.
