An Post pushes for freelance postmen

A plan to subcontract out the delivery of mail in rural areas is among a set of radical proposals being discussed by management and unions at An Post. Under the proposals, self- employed postmen would be responsible for making deliveries using their own vans and they would not be on the An Post payroll.
The concept would not apply to major urban centres which are less costly to service. An Post is anxious to implement major change at the company’s “collection and delivery” operation. An Post faces an operating loss of EUR30 million for this year. Its chief executive, Mr Donal Curtin, has spoken about the company being on a financial “knife edge”.

An Post offers 5% pay rise in exchange for restructuring

An Post staff could be in line for a 5 per cent pay increase in exchange for agreeing to major restructuring at the loss-making company. Talks at the Labour Relations Commission are understood to have reached an advanced stage, with An Post management proposing a 5.35 per cent pay increase to unions. The increase, however, would be spread over three years. The largest union at An Post, the Communication Worker’s Union, remains unhappy with the proposal. Its executive is expected to meet shortly to discuss the offer. An Post management declined to comment yesterday and said talks were still ongoing.

The International AddressGuide – now published with eastern European countries

The cross-border sourcing of addresses for direct mailing is becoming easier for eastern European countries: the new edition of the International AddressGuide from Swiss Post International now also includes, alongside the existing 15 countries in western Europe, new entries for Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia. The AddressGuide lists 500 providers from 20 countries and describes what they have to offer, with key figures such as the number of company addresses, decision-makers, private addresses, selection criteria, and the extent of their special address databases. To help users evaluate potential suppliers, the guide provides information such as year of establishment and number of employees. For each country, it also contains an outline of the address market with detailed information on prices, data protection, return rates, address formats and the correct salutations.

Postal service axed in Aer Lingus costs drive

Aer Lingus is to axe its postal and courier service to Britain and Europe from January as part of its ongoing drive to compete with other low-cost carriers.
Chief executive Willie Walsh told An Post management late last week that he had decided to drop its mail and courier deliveries from European flights in addition to cargo services from January 1. Aer Lingus carries about four million items of mail for An Post to Britain and Europe each week, both commercial and domestic. An Post’s director of corporate and regulatory affairs, Larry Donald, warned that the decision could impact on its own cost base. “It could have serious implications in terms of cost and also the quality of service, and it could also have implications for delays both for inbound and outbound post, depending on the availability of alternative flights,” Donald said.
