Irish Postmasters to ballot on industrial action

Sub-post office owners are to begin balloting tomorrow (12/05) on industrial action that could cause widespread disruption to services.

The action is threatened by the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU) and arises from a row with An Post over bank holiday working and other issues.

RFID on the Threshold of European Breakthrough

The key findings of an international study undertaken by LogicaCMG reveal that Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is high on the agenda for European retailers, food manufacturers and logistic service providers. A majority of the companies interviewed in the Netherlands, UK, Ireland, Germany, France and Belgium, gave RFID top priority in terms of planned IT investment.

RFID is seen as the successor to barcoding. By using RFID it is possible to electronically identify and track objects, such as supermarket goods, without time delays or the need for human intervention. As a result, supply chain logistics are more streamlined and efficient and this ultimately leads to lower costs and higher revenues.

An Postal Dispute Talks Resume

Talks aimed at resolving the postal dispute have begun at the Labor Relations Commission. Earlier today An Post managers said they were confident that, with goodwill, they could find a way of negotiating an end to the dispute. The Communications Workers’ Union said progress would mean getting their members back to work. More than 550 staff remain suspended from work at the Dublin Mails Centre in the row over changes to work practices.

No sign of Irish postal dispute end as talks deadlocked

There was still no sign of a breakthrough in the postal dispute last night as the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) maintained informal contact with both sides in an effort to broker a resolution.Although behind the scenes efforts to find some middle ground will recommence today, neither An Post’s management nor the Communications Workers Union (CWU) indicated any willingness to compromise yesterday. Separate talks between both sides and the LRC last week broke down with LRC chief executive Kieran Mulvey saying there was not enough middle ground even to get both sides into structured talks. A spokesman for the company last night said that there was no reason to believe anything would change An Post’s position until workers agreed to new work practices.
