Cost of international mail from Ireland set to rise

Consumers face yet further price increase after the Commission for Communications Regulation sanctioned increases in the cost of sending mail abroad by An Post. The changes, which had been requested by An Post in October, will see the cost of sending a standard letter to Britain increase from 41 cent to 50 cent, while the cost of sending a similar letter to other European countries will now be 57 cent, up from 44 cent.

Meeting to be held to consider escalating postal dispute

An escalation of the dispute which has disrupted some postal services around the country is to be considered by sub-post office owners at a meeting in Dublin today. Calls for sub-post offices to be closed in an attempt to bring the dispute to a head are likely to be aired at the meeting. A more gradual escalation of the dispute, however, is considered likely.

Hynes to retire from An Post next year

State postal group An Post today announced that chief executive John Hynes is to retire at the end of his current contract in July 2003. Hynes, who has been with An Post since 1990, is one of the longest serving heads of a commercial state enterprise.
