The next-day parcels market in Ireland today is worth IR£110m-120m (€140m-152m). SDS, the parcels arm of the Irish post office An Post, claims a 40% share and rising. Overall turnover is likely to approach IR£68m (€86m) this year and the company is profitable, unlike its sickly Parcelforce counterpart in the UK.

An Post to challenge regulators Eur 3m levy

An Post will today challenge in the High Court a £2.35 million (EUR2.98 million) levy charged by the telecoms regulator, Ms Etain Doyle. It is thought the State company will challenge Ms Doyle’s legal right to impose the fee for regulating the quality of postal services this year and in 2002.

DHL expands its Dublin facility

DHL International’s Dublin Airport gateway is to be extended, to permit wider use of automated processes, thus enabling the facility to handle the greater throughput DHL is forecasting.
Two months ago, the company opened a courier base on the north side of Dublin and intends expanding its depot on the city’s Western Industrial Estate. Its base in the city centre handles mainly documents and small packages.

Bank boost for Post Office network

Ireland’s biggest banking group is to link up with the state-backed post company in a move that will lead to 1,000 post offices becoming its agents.
The alliance between Allied Irish Banks (correct) and An Post is part of a strategy on the part of the bank to maintain a branch presence in all of Ireland’s rural towns and villages, and comes at a time when a number of local post offices have been seen as under threat of closure on financial viability grounds.
