FedEx to Acquire Kinko's; Expands Global Presence in 1,200 Stores

FedEx Corporation and Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, Inc., today jointly announced an agreement for FedEx to acquire Kinko’s for US$2.4 billion, payable in cash. The transaction is not expected to have a material impact on fiscal 2004 results but is expected to be accretive to earnings in fiscal 2005, which begins June 1, 2004. “The FedEx and Kinko’s combination will substantially increase our retail presence worldwide and will enable both companies to take advantage of growth opportunities in the fast-moving digital economy,” said Frederick W. Smith, chairman, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Corp. “Our two companies share a similar background, culture and customer focus, and that common ground is extremely important as we prepare for future growth and success.” Privately-held Kinko’s operates approximately 1,200 stores worldwide and estimates annual revenue of about $2 billion for its year ending December 31. Funds managed by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, a global private equity investment firm, own approximately 75 percent of Kinko’s outstanding shares.

Home Shopping Opportunity Missed

A new report on Home Shopping from Mintel’s Retail Intelligence argues that retailers are missing out on a big opportunity in home shopping. However, the study finds the European home shopping sector continuing to lose retail share, with the few areas of sector growth failing to offset the slow declining big book mail order sector. While overall retail sales are predicted to grow by 16% between 2000 and 2005, mail order is expected to show an increase of just 8.2%, representing 2.7% of total retail sales in Europe by 2005. British shoppers are spending more per capita on home shopping than any other European country.

Brazil Post nears online shopping mall launch

Correios, the Brazilian post office, is gearing up to open an online shopping ma where small and mid-sized local companies can set up affordable storefronts.

Dubbed CorreiosNet Shopping, the new virtual mall should launch either this mont or next depending on what the post’s top brass decides.

Correios officials say that the online mall has been designed to provide all the technical, commercial and logistical infrastructure required to operate a reliab high-quality, secure, low-cost e-business.

Chairman of UK Post Office Ltd appointed

Mike Hodgkinson, the outgoing chief executive of BAA plc, has been appointed Chairman of Post Office Limited, the retailing business of Royal Mail Group, it was announced today. His appointment to the Royal Mail Board was announced in November last year as one of four new non-executive directors. Mr Hodgkinson will take up his additional role on May 1 and he will also become the Royal Mail Board’s senior independent director.
