Local distribution company John T Evans Haulage Ltd is celebrating its first anniversary in Bristol since it opened a new GBP 1m (25,000 sq) warehouse facility in Avonmouth last year.

As one of the largest members in the Palletways network, John T Evans manages over 250 incoming pallets a day and delivers 150 outgoing pallets for over 50 customers in Bristol and the surrounding areas. Palletline member scoops top industry award

Halifax-based Expect Distribution, a leading member of Palletline plc, the UK’s most experienced palletized freight distribution network, has scooped the road haulage industry’s most prestigious prize – the 2007 Motor Transport Awards Haulier of the Year award.

The award recognizes the outstanding haulier or distribution company of the year – companies have to show not only strong financial results, but a strong all-round commitment to professionalism and customer care, and active measures taken to improve service levels.

The ceremony for the awards, which since 1988 have recognized excellence in the field of logistics and distribution, was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London.

A key factor in Expect’s success was the impact of a major GBP 200,000-plus rebranding exercise in the first quarter of 2006 which saw the company change its name from Pennine Parcels to Expect Distribution to better reflect the nature of its business.

Based in Listers Road, Halifax, Expect Distribution (www.expectdistribution.com) employs 125 people and owns and operates 52 vehicles. Established in 1988 as a parcel delivery service, the company’s work with palletized consignments grew so rapidly that this has now been its core business for a number of years. It is the largest inputter into Palletline, for whom it covers the LS, WF, HX, BD, HG, HD and OL postcode areas, inputting more than 2,500 pallets each week. Indeed, since becoming a founder member of Palletline in 1992, its annual turnover has rocketed from GBP 350,000 to around GBP 10 million, with growth of 16 pct in the first half of the company’s current financial year.

The government has prepared a draft regulation allowing foreign investors to own up to 95.5 per cent of a courier company in the country.

Under the present regulation a foreign investor is allowed to have up to 95 per cent stake in a freight forwarding company but not more than 49 per cent in a courier company.

Postal Service Director Woro Indah Widiastuti said the draft regulation has been in the office of the trade minister for approval.

Earlier the association of logistic companies (Asperindo) urged the government to allow foreign investors to wholly own a logistic company to attract foreign investors, but their operation areas should be restricted.

Norfolk based Star Transport has joined PalletFORCE

Norfolk-based transport company Star Transport has joined PalletFORCE, one of the country’s fastest growing palletised distribution networks, in the long-term interests of the company and its customers.

Star was previously a member of another network for nine years, but decided the timing was right to switch networks. Although Director Howard Marriott looked at a number of replacement networks, the PalletFORCE name came up repeatedly through word of mouth from contacts in the industry.

“PalletFORCE clearly has an excellent reputation,” Howard Marriott explained. “By what other hauliers have said, the Network is quick to resolve any problems and cares enough to really look after its members. And because it is owned by those members, there is an added incentive for everybody to pull together in the interest of delivering top-quality service.”

Star agreed to become a Shareholder Member Depot for parts of the IP and NR postcodes after meetings with the Network confirmed this opinion. Since joining, Marriott says, “first impressions have been very good.”

A family-owned business with over forty years of experience, Star operates out of a 40,000 sq ft depot in Thetford. Its sixty-strong fleet comprises a mix of rigids and 44 tonners.
