Austrian Post acquires a 74.9% shareholding in Scherübl Transport GmbH

Scherübl is an Austrian SME with annual revenues of about EUR 3.5m. The firm has earned an excellent reputation in the industry as a specialist for the temperature-controlled delivery of pharmaceutical products, featuring advanced technical know-how and the highest standards. Almost all prominent pharmaceutical companies are customers of Scherübl. One important service it offers is the cooled transport of pharmaceuticals, i.e. ensuring a continuous cold chain ranging between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, with uninterrupted temperature monitoring and recording throughout the entire delivery process.

Through its acquisition of a majority shareholding of Scherübl, and the takeover of Thermomed by the trans-o-flex Group, Austrian Post is now represented in the specialised pharmaceutical logistics market in Germany, Austria and the Benelux countries, a niche market with high growth potential.

Austrian Post will strengthen the good market position of Scherübl by newly establishing a network consisting of four pharmaceutical distribution centres in Austria featuring the required infrastructure (e.g. temperature-controlled storage, special cooled containers and temperature documentation). The distribution centres will be set up in Regau (Upper Austria), Hall (Tyrol), Kalsdorf (Styria) and in Vienna by the end of this year.

UPN opens new markets with launch of Micro Pallet service

UPN has launched a new level of service for the UK market, to help bridge the gap between parcel and palletized freight sectors.

The new Micro Pallet service is available from more than 60 national UPN depots from the 1st May 2007, and will open up a number of new market opportunities for UPN and its members.

The new service from UPN allows customers to ship pallets of up to 150 kilos anywhere in the UK on a next day or timed service for around 25 per cent less than the cost of a full sized pallet. Users of the new service can ship their freight on standard 1.2m by 0.8m pallets, with a height of up to 0.6 meters.

Customers will be provided with the same high quality service provided by the UPN network. Earlier in 2007, UPN also announced the implementation of a real time signature capture system, using the latest hand held XDA technology. This is provided as standard with the micro pallet service, giving users access to the kinds of service levels that used to be the preserve of the parcel market. They will be able to move into new markets, with improved customer service levels and considerable reductions in the cost of logistics.

Pall-Ex is named as Business of the Year

Pall-Ex is delighted to announce winning the much coveted Business of the Year Award, at a ceremony for the Leicestershire Business Awards. The evening’s events were attended by representatives from 18 finalist companies from across the region.

The finalists for the award included Pall-Ex, Rushcliffe, and Geosynthetics. There were four rounds of judging before the winners were announced. Competition at this stage was tough. With 20,000 sq ft of storage Geosynthetics, part of the Hansam Group, is regarded as the largest distributor of geosynthetic material in the UK. Essentially they distribute fabrics which are used for soil stabilisation. Rushcliffe Care specialise in care for the elderly, and were finalists for the Success Through People award.

To win Business of the Year, Pall-Ex needed to demonstrate stability and strong reputation within the Leicestershire economy. The company easily exceeded these criteria by recently celebrating a landmark 10 years in business, and by currently assessing opportunities to expand the operation by building another hub in the style of the existing GBP 12 million investment situated in Ellistown, Leicestershire, close to the A50 and M1.. Essentially, Pall-Ex unites 100 member depots from across the UK. These regionally based haulage companies collect freight from their designated postcode areas, destined for other parts of the country or Europe. The freight is then transported to the central Pall-Ex transhipment hub.

At the hub, the freight is sorted by delivery area and assigned to the haulier serving that location for delivery. Next day and economy services are available. Pall-Ex has access to over 7,500 vehicles and more than five million square feet of warehousing in the UK and Europe. The co-ordination of freight collections and deliveries, minimizes mileage and maximises the usage of vehicle capacity. Essentially the Pall-Ex service concept is simple. They provide an organizational solution for cost effective distribution of palletised freight. The scale of the operation however, is breathtaking. Serving every UK postcode, from a 23 acre hub, Pall-Ex has a typical throughput of around 9000 pallets per night.
