Government plans for lorry road-user charging in the UK: a critique and an alternative

The British government was planning to introduce a system of road-user charging for lorries in 2008. In July 2005, it decided to abandon these
plans and incorporate the development of a charging scheme for trucks into a future road pricing system for all categories of traffic. This paper
examines the objectives of the proposed lorry road-user charging scheme in the UK and argues that the government’s plans for LRUC would have
been inappropriate. An alternative method of road-user charging for lorries is proposed which would meet the main objectives of LRUC at much
lower cost, disruption and risk and act as an interim measure until it is possible, technically and politically, to introduce general road pricing in the
UK.

Business Post says Q1 trading in line with expectations

Business Post Group PLC said first quarter trading was satisfactory and in line
with the board’s expectations.

In a statement prepared for today’s AGM, chairman Peter Kane said the performance improvement initiatives within Parcel Services continue to make progress.

Parcel Services, comprising the overnight business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and cross-border parcel delivery activities, continues to make steady progress following the difficulties experienced in 2005, Kane added.

He said service levels have remained at a very high standard and the programme of reducing unit costs within the Linehaul operation is proceeding to plan.

Further progress has also been made in improving the performance of the franchise network.

Finland Post acquires Universal Spedisjon in Norway

Finland Post Corporation is to acquire the Norwegian logistics company Universal Spedisjon AS from the two families owning it. Universal Spedition AS posts net sales of approximately EUR 44 million, and operates via its outlets with terminals based in Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger, Trondheim and Bergen.

Universal Spedisjon provides cargo, forwarding and contract logistics services in Norway and throughout Europe in collaboration with partners. The company employs a staff of 75, whose jobs will not be affected by the acquisition in any way.

Palletways launches new distribution operation in Spain

Palletways Group has officially launched its new Spanish distribution network, dedicated to express delivery of small palletised freight consignments. The new company, Palletways Iberia, is a joint venture between Palletways Group and Transportes Campillo. It will offer a 24-hour delivery service for small palletised consignments anywhere within the country, as well as an economy 48-hour service.

Local Palletways management will run the company and the network in Spain, headed by newly appointed managing director Luis Zubialde, who was previously managing director of logistics provider, Fiege.
