Business Post to review suppliers: failed pallet firm born again using 'phoenix' manoeuvre

Business Post Group, one of the UK’s biggest express delivery companies, last night committed to reviewing its “suppliers” in Scotland after an investigation by The Herald revealed that its main Scottish distributor is the product of a “classic phoenix” situation. Weaver Pallet Express, based in Stepps, near Glasgow, was last week forced into liquidation owing creditors more than GBP1m. It was a supplier to Business Post’s UK Pallets division. However, The Herald discovered that Weaver, run by Bruce Jenkins, re-emerged under a different name, United Pallets Scotland, and is operating from a different address at Queenslie Industrial Estate.

Fortec profit rises 12.5%

Fortec Pallet Distribution Network says it made a profit of £35,000 for the 2005 financial year, up by 12.5% on 2004.
The rugby-based company celebrates its 10th anniversary this month, moved nearly half a million pallets last year and predicts a further volume increase during 2006 of up to 19%.

Palletways extends into Switzerland

Palletways has appointed its first member in Switzerland as part of its Central European Network expansion, which also covers the Benelux countries, Germany, Denmark and northern France. Universal Express, based in Münchenstein/Basel, will provide a 48/72-hour distribution service to and from the regions covered by the Central European Network with exclusivity for Switzerland, France zip code 68 and Germany zip code 79.

Pall-Ex pushes its own 'decker design

Pall-Ex wants its members to buy its own standardised double-decker, which it describes as the “ideal hub and operational trailer”.

Andrew Triolo, Pall-Ex business development manager, tells MT: “We will be encouraging our members to opt for this, as commonality is a good thing.” So far only one has gone on the road.

The Pall-Ex-spec trailer, the first of which was built by Montracon and went into operation with Davies Turner in January, incorporates a number of innovative safety features. These include see-through mesh flooring, which allows forklift operators to assess pallet positioning and pre-empt any loading or unloading problems.
