Palletforce targets Scottish market

PalletFORCE is planning to shake up the Scottish pallet distribution market with a substantial increase in its presence across the country, including a new depot in Glasgow and two well-known new members. Existing member Wm Armstrong is opening a new depot near Glasgow and has been joined in the network by two new members Gordon Leslie Distribution, based near Paisley, and JBT, located in Aberdeen and Inverness, with additional depots on the Shetland and Orkney islands. Coverage in Scotland is completed by one of PalletFORCE’s founder members Glenhire Express, based in Fife.

Geodis opens up European front

Geodis is to launch a new European groupage servicecalled Eurofirst next month, providing customers with online tracking, PoDs and quality reports. The service will initially cover ten countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain; a further 15 countries will be added at the end of the year. Geodis launched the Eurofirst product at its annual results presentation in London last Friday. The main groupage business in the UK goes live with Eurofirst in April and the pallet network, Fortec, is expected to plug into the system in May. This should prove a major benefit for Fortec member companies and their customers, says managing director Rod Abrahams.

Lufthansa and DHL form specialised transport joint venture

Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Deutsche Post AG’s DHL DanzasAir & Ocean said they set up a joint venture to provide ‘temperature controlled’ transport solutions for the life science industry. The new Florida-based company, called LifeConEx, will help life science companies such as pharmaceuticals prevent damage to temperature-sensitiveproducts, the companies said. LifeConEx will begin operating on April 1 and, according to Lufthansa and DHL, it will be the only firm of its kind.

Major mover on the road less travelled – interview with head of TNTs Express Road Network

When a fourth Boeing 737 joined his fleet last year, Niky Terzakis, MD of TNT Airways, told IFW it would enable the whole of Europe to be connected at speed. He chose Portugal to Finland as the longest possible journey across the continent, and one that most road operators would think twice about undertaking.
By genuine coincidence, however, one of the first packages I studied during a recent evening tour of TNT’s Express Road Network (ERN) hub in Duiven, near Arnhem, was a batch of Tyco wiring harnesses which had begun their journey in Lisbon on 15 February. Two nights later, they had reached Arnhem via Benavente in Spain, one of the network’s 14 sub-hubs. In another two days they would arrive at their final destination of Turku, either on a direct trailer or via an “overspill” trunker through the Helsingborg sub-hub.

Fortec grows in packaging

FORTEC Pallet Distribution Network, a leading next-day palletised freight delivery organisation, reports an influx of new business from manufacturers, importers, retailers and distributors in the packaging sector.

These are businesses looking to expand their customer base by providing low-cost guaranteed next-day deliveries nationwide, but held back by lack of transport or economic resources.

Says Alan Cramley, Fortec Pallet’s network development director: “A lot of small and medium sized businesses in the packaging sector are becoming aware that they could expand their customer base overnight by utilising the resources of the Fortec Pallet Network through its nearly 60 licensees located around the country.”
