Prestons wins with Pall-Ex

Prestons of Potto says it has secured twp new clients since joining Pall-Ex at the beginning of the year covering Teesside, and it now hopes to expand the service area.
Annie Preston, chairman of Prestons of Potto, says: “We operate in seven regions and I see no reason why our service with Pall-Ex cannot be expanded to these areas.”
Preston says it took the decision to join a pallet network after turning down small part loads which it was unable to handle.

UK Government forcing more freight off rail and on to the roads

The Government is in jeopardy of forcing even more freight off rail and on to the roads with its latest proposals for Railtrack’s replacement, according to the country’s largest freight operator. EWS, which employs 6,000 people, has told rail regulator Tom Winsor that it is “extremely disturbed” by some of Network Rail’s plans. In a letter to Mr Winsor, EWS says that “the new structure of the industry discriminates against freight operators and rail freight”.

PalletForce into Europe

Palletised distribution network PalletForce which has just completed its first year of trading, has revealed plans to launch a European service.
“We have a member, Gillimot, based in Kampenhault, Belgium, and Ripon-based Nidd transport covering Spain and Portugal,” says chief executive Mick Scarlett. “We will develop these from januay.”
Palletforce, which started trading in October 31, 2001, announced a turnover in excess of £8m in its first full year and says it has handled more than half a million pallets. It now has 56 shareholder members owning 82% of its shares.
Three directors own remaining 18%.
The firm says it has recruited members from all over the leading independent networks and has a limited number of open points, including north-west London, Tunbridge Wells and Cambridgeshire.

Automation Projects Expected To Save $3 Billion

The U.S. Postal Service has embarked upon two automation projects that, within five years, could save nearly $3 billion in operational costs annually and reduce its employees’ workload by the equivalent of 37,500 full-time workers.
One system will arrange magazines and other large, flat mail in the order it is delivered by carriers. A second system will combine flat and letter mail into a single sequenced package. If the technology, which has not yet been proven, works as hoped, the daily tasks of a letter carrier could be reduced by 20 percent, said Tom Day, Postal Service vice president of engineering.
