How Poste Italiane is truly delivering

Interviewed in his Rome office, Mr Sarmi cites figures showing that in its European sector, PI, largely because of its financial services divisions, has the highest earnings before interest and tax rate of 16 per cent, compared with TNT’s 12.7 per cent, and minus 0.1 per cent for the UK’s Royal Mail.

Fortune magazine ranked PI in the top 10 “most- admired companies in the world” for logistics, while Cisco in 2007 gave the Italians the “best corporate IP network” award this year, describing them as “the European leader for hybrid electronic mail and document processing”.

In terms of volume of transactions, PI’s Banco Posta in effect ranks as the number one retail bank in Italy although it is still waiting for its licence from the treasury.

It holds EUR 300bn (USD 441bn) in savings. The life assurance division ranks number two or three, says Mr Sarmi, who has also just launched a mobile phone service that aims to attract 2m users in three years.

While Royal Mail plans to close 2,500 branches across the UK over the next 18 months, PI – which has roughly the same number, about 14,000 – added 100 more this year.

Mr Sarmi, who joined PI in 2002, wants liberalisation as soon as possible, but he says the French and Italian governments want the target date put back from 2009 to 2011. The UK market was liberalised in 2006.

Privatisation remains the Italian government’s stated goal, but Mr Sarmi sees no decision on the horizon.

Investment banks have valued the company at EUR 14bn to EUR 15bn.

Post office closures in Scotland

Campaigners yesterday warned communities across Scotland will face a “devastating” blow in the New Year with the closure of hundreds of post offices.

Details of around 40 post offices likely to close in the Highlands and Islands will be announced on January 8, with the list of the 44 to be axed in Glasgow, Central Scotland and Argyll and Bute published the following day.

Announcements on further closures elsewhere in the country will be made throughout the year as part of the UK Government’s plans to shut 2500 post offices to help tackle rising losses.

Postal bosses insist “the status quo is not an option” and that the large-scale closures will guarantee the service’s long-term future.

But the decision was criticised yesterday by politicians and postal workers, who warned of the “devastating” effect it will have on local communities, especially those in rural areas.

Mike Weir, the SNP’s spokesman on business and postal affairs at Westminster, criticised the UK Government for giving communities only six weeks to fight the plans.

A spokesman for Postwatch said they believed the consultation period for the closure plans should be doubled from six to 12 weeks.

Royal Mail loses contract to TNT

Royal Mail has been dumped by Preston council bosses in favour of postal operator TNT. Preston Council’s postal bill was slashed by over GBP 17,500 in the move.

Preston Council is expected to approve plans to transfer all mail to TNT although Royal Mail will still deliver the bulk of the mail through what is known as ‘Downstream Access’ – this is where rivals can sort and handle mail but leave Royal Mail to deliver it.

Royal Mail has complained to Postcomm that Downstream Access allows its rivals to poach business contracts but leaving Royal Mail to do the legwork.
