UK Royal Mail gears up for massive standard life postal vote

Royal Mail will today launch one of the biggest mail operations it has undertaken for a private company when it begins delivering 3.77 million documents and ballot papers to Standard Life members and policy-holders throughout the UK. The Edinburgh-based financial services giant selected Royal Mail, ahead of competition from other postal operators, to carry out the historic mailing of the documents which will allow members to vote on the company’s demutualisation proposals. The operation involves 3.77 million documents, weighing 300 grams each. This amounts to 1,131 tonnes of mail and to move it requires 3,000 mail cages and over 70 articulated lorries from Royal Mail’s fleet.

Campaign to save UK Post Office card account

A campaign is being started this week to try to persuade the government to reverse its decision to end a crucial contract which could spell closure for thousands of Britain’s post offices. A petition by the federation says: “We believe that the post office network provides a vital service to local communities in both urban and rural areas, which are threatened by the government’s withdrawal of services from local post offices.”

Postal operators welcome Brussels legal challenge to VAT exemption of Royal Mail

Private sector post operators yesterday welcomed the European Commission’s launch of legal proceedings against the government for exempting Royal Mail’s postal services from value added tax. However, bulk mailers were divided on a move that could lead to higher postal charges for some business sectors, including some of the largest mail users. Royal Mail warned that ending the exemption could mean higher prices for the majority of its users who cannot use private operators. “We wouldn’t want to see VAT on postage stamps that individuals, small businesses and charities would have to pay,” it said.

EC gives TPG space on German and UK postal markets

The European Commission (EC) wants to give TPG Post, the mail business of Dutch mail and logistics group TNT NV, and other foreign competitors an equal chance on the German and UK postal markets while abolishing the payment of value added tax (VAT) on mail services, the EC said on April 10, 2006. An exemption from VAT on these markets has been granted only to the former monopolists Deutsche Post and Royal Mail for most of their services. According to the European Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs (fiscal affairs), the VAT differences are not in line with the European Union (EU) competition rules.
