UK Royal Mail First Class service remains at target-beating levels

Royal Mail’s First Class service remains at target-beating levels, with 94% of First Class stamped letters arriving the day after posting between October and December last year, it was announced today. This is well ahead of the 93% national target. Second Class mail also beat its 98.5% target with a 98.9% performance over the same three-month period. Both First and Second Class mail have been performing at or above target level for more than a year.

EU says Britain clear to give post offices 150 million pounds a year

European Union regulators ruled Friday that Britain can pay the country’s post office 150 million pounds (EUR219 million; USD261.86 million) a year to keep rural branches open. The European Commission said it decided not to raise any objections to the government subsidy because the funding only covered the Post Office Ltd.’s duty to pay out social welfare and pensions throughout the country. EU state aid rules forbid governments granting firms aid which gives them an unfair competitive advantage over others. The Post Office, the largest European retail network by number of outlets, is an “arms’ length” retail subsidiary of the state-owned mail delivery firm Royal Mail Group PLC.

UK Royal Mail 'needs Pounds 150m' to keep 10,000 post offices open

Royal Mail is pressing the Government to decide whether it will renew its Pounds 150 million subsidy for rural sub-post offices. The push comes after it emerged yesterday that Adam Crozier, its chief executive, had told a group of MPs that more than 10,000 post offices across Britain could close within the next four years if the three-year support package, which ends in 2008, was not renewed. Mr Crozier said that Royal Mail needed a rump of only 4,000 post offices to fulfil its licence obligations for delivering mail. The remaining 10,500, of which 8,000 are loss-making rural offices, needed to gain extra government subsidies or become profitable to survive.

Thousands of UK post offices `won't be closed'

Royal Mail denied today that it had any plans to close thousands of post offices but admitted it faced a “challenging” future. Chief executive Adam Crozier repeated to MPs earlier this month that just 4,000 offices would be needed to run a basic postal service. There are 14,500 post offices across the UK, but officials made it clear today this did not mean that 10,000 would close.
“We have absolutely no plans to close 10,000 post offices, although the outlook for the network remains challenging,” said a spokesman. “The future of the network depends to a large extent on Government decisions. There have always been more post offices than is required for a mail service. That is because they have offered a range of other services in the past, most of which have been from Government.”

UK Royal Mail dismisses Postcomm fine as 'Monty Pythonesque'

Allan Leighton, Royal Mail chairman, has accused the postal regulator of “Monty Pythonesque” behaviour after it slapped a Pounds 2m fine on the company. The decision by Postcomm followed an 14-month investigation into complaints from three rival operators that the state-owned company appeared able to exploit its dominant position to gain “an unfair commercial advantage”. The regulator said Royal Mail had failed to set up so-called “Chinese walls” between its various business areas to prevent conflicts of interest. Nigel Stapleton, Postcomm chairman, said: “Competition is starting to offer a better deal for customers but, given Royal Mail’s dominant position, the full benefits will never be felt unless the playing field is made as level as possible for the new operators. “We cannot allow any actions by Royal Mail that unfairly keep competitors out of the market.” But Mr Leighton hit back: “This is a shoddy report from a grandstanding regulator who is looking to micro-manage the entire postal industry. It is full of unsubstantiated and subjective views which are not based in fact. This huge and arbitrary penalty is illogical,” he said. “It is regulation for the sake of regulation. This is almost Monty Pythonesque.”
