Kennedy puts veto on Lib Dem proposal to privatise UK Royal Mail

CHARLES KENNEDY has vetoed a proposal to privatise the Royal Mail before the launch of a Liberal Democrat manifesto today, renewing talk of a left-right split in the party.

Senior MPs in the party believed that the proposal, prepared by Malcolm Bruce, the Liberal Democrat trade and industry spokesman, was “too right- wing”.

In a dramatic vote, most of the front bench, led by Mr Kennedy, voted to scrap the sale, which was expected to be part of the manifesto. The move is said to have followed a heated debate among many MPs that the party was becoming too wedded to the idea of privatisation and the free market.

One senior MP said after the vote: “We were pretty unhappy about this sell-off idea and thought it would send the wrong message about the party. We voted it down. I don’t think Charles liked the proposal at all.”

Stamp prices lift UK Postcomm costs to pounds 10m

Postcomm, the regulator for Britain’s mail system, will see its costs spiral from pounds 5.94m in 2002-03 to pounds 10.2m in 2004-05, according to the organisation’s annual report. The regulator is funded mainly by the Royal Mail, which is owned by the Government, and any increase in costs must be approved by the Department of Trade & Industry. Yesterday a spokesman for the organisation said that the money would be spent on extra consultants to look at whether the price of stamps will be increased. “We have a very small number of staff, so we tend to employ consultants,” he said. The bill for “outside consultants, lawyers etc” is expected to increase from pounds 2.22m in the last year to pounds 5.3m next.

UK Royal Mail could lose its monopoly years early

Royal Mail could lose its monopoly on delivering letters years early after a damning report found it beset by ‘abysmal failures’. Rival companies may be allowed to run competing postal services sooner than planned because of the’ dramatic decline’ in standards. The market was not due to be opened for three years, but regulators are considering introducing competition much earlier to give longsuffering customers a choice. Postal watchdog Postcomm made the announcement yesterday in its annual report which concluded that Royal Mail standards were ‘deteriorating’. Postcomm’s chief executive, Martin Stanley, said ‘We are examining the possibility that we might open the whole market much earlier than our original date of April 2007.’

Crozier cuts back UK Royal Mail board

Royal Mail’s chief executive, Adam Crozier, has cut its management board from 11 to eight members in an attempt to make it more efficient. Paul Rich, marketing director, Paul Bateson, managing director of logistics and Vanessa Leeson, managing director of Parcelforce, have left the board, as Mr Crozier seeks to prepare Royal Mail for competition. They will remain with the company. Mr Crozier has also tightened his grip on the company by replacing Elmar Toime, Royal Mail’s executive deputy chairman, as chairman of the management board, although he remains a board member. Mr Crozier took over day-to-day running of the letters business from Mr Toime in May. Royal Mail declined to comment, but a source close to the company said: “This is Adam Crozier consolidating his authority. He took direct control of the largest bit of the business and is forming a smaller, tighter board. It would be really wrong to blame the quality of service on these three individuals.”

UK Royal Mail trio pay the price for postal failure

Royal Mail boss Adam Crozier will this week dismiss three key figures from his front-line management team in an aggressive response to a recent slump in service standards. Crozier has also tightened his personal grip on the company by installing himself as chairman of the committee which has day-to-day responsibility for the running of Royal Mail. Sources close to Royal Mail said marketing director Paul Rich, logistics chief Paul Bateson and Parcelforce boss Vanessa Leeson had been removed from the management board, leaving it with eight members. Former Football Association boss Crozier has also replaced Royal Mail’s executive deputy chairman, New Zealander Elmar Toime, as chairman of the committee following rumours of a difficult working relationship between the two men. In May, Crozier took day-to-day control of Royal Mail’s letters business from Toime.

Among the directors who remain on the management committee are Post Office chief executive David Mills, finance chief Marisa Cassoni and human resources director Tony McCarthy.
