UK Royal Mail reintroduces collection tabs

Postwatch is delighted that Royal Mail has agreed to reintroduce collection tabs to its postboxes. The tabs will be reinstated during the rest of 2004.
Postwatch began its campaign to have collection tabs reinstated in September 2002. Commenting on Royal Mail’s u-turn Peter Carr, Chairman of Postwatch, said: “This is good news for customers. We are delighted that our perseverance has paid off. We are very pleased that our campaign, which was supported by the industry’s regulator Postcomm, persuaded Royal Mail that collection tabs were necessary. Royal Mail deserve recognition for accepting they got it wrong and for taking steps to put things right.”

UK postal workers union attacks newspaper subscription plans

Postal workers union the CWU has attacked Royal Mail plans to dispense with the Newspaper Registration Service. The service is a cut-price method to send newspapers through the post at a reduced rate. It was set up in the mid-1800s to enable publishers to reach readers living in remote areas. By registering their newspapers with the Royal Mail, users get first class deliveries for second class rates. Communication Workers’ Union general secretary Billy Hayes is calling on ministers to intervene to reverse the planned scrapping of the service.

50g mail market

email from Paul Jackson: I hadn’t heard the statistic quoted by Roger Higginson at our recent meeting that 77% of the UK mail is below 50gms. I assume it was the UK or was it the EU? Is this a confidential figure?
Response from David Robottom: It was an EU statistic. The volume below 50g within UK is a great deal smaller than 77%. It is a matter of public record and came from CTCON’s research for the commission a few years ago.

TPG deal ‘a significant step forward for mail competition,’ says UK Postcomm

Postcomm chief executive Martin Stanley today welcomed the access agreement between Royal Mail and TPG Post UK Ltd under which Royal Mail will deliver post ‘the final mile’ for the Dutch company. Mr Stanley said: “This is another significant step forward for competition in the UK postal market, and a sign that the industry is growing increasingly confident that the access arrangements, driven by Postcomm, will deliver benefits to the customer. We expect other deals to follow.”
