Royal Mail fails one in four

Customers in a quarter of all postcode areas continue to receive a below minimum postal service, with less than 90% of their first class mail being delivered the next day, even when posted in the same postcode, according to figures published by Royal Mail today. Commenting on the figures, Peter Carr, Chairman of Postwatch said; “It is good news that Royal Mail’s overall performance for first class mail has improved but this cannot disguise the fact that a quarter of all postcodes, many in densely populated urban areas,
are receiving a substandard service.

UK businesses to pay postage online

Companies will be able to buy postage over the internet under a pilot scheme unveiled by Royal Mail (RM) yesterday. According to RM, the new service will be available to “selected customers” in January and February next year, and will be extended in the autumn if it is successful. Gillian Wilmot, managing director of mail markets, said: “We want customers to have a choice about how they access our products and services in a way that best suits them.”

UK Post Office Chief appeals to MPs

Allan Leighton, chairman of Royal Mail Group, has written to all 659 members of Parliament, asking them to protest against the postal regulator’s plans for future funding. In his letter, the second he has sent to politicians in the past two months, Mr Leighton says the Postcomm proposals are “disastrous’ and will fatally undermine Royal Mail’s recovery plan. “I hope you won’t mind getting a second letter from me, but time is running out to change the regulator’s mind,” he writes. “He is likely to take key decisions in a matter of weeks which will have huge implications for the future of the UK’s postal service and the network of post office branches. I would, therefore, urge you to write to Postcomm to make your views known.”

Consignia's cultural challenge

In a fortnight or so, more than 80 of the senior management at Consignia will learn that they are out of a job. The list of casualties will mark the completion of a radical 18-month assessment of the company’s top talent. Stage one, completed last Friday, saw about 320 CVs, drawn primarily from inside the organisation, pared down to 90 senior men and women who will comprise the organisation’s new inner sanctum. The 90 will in effect replace what has until now been called the “Top Y” – a group of 120 – and will take ultimate responsibility for an organisation that announced losses of £1.1bn in June and that now wants to foster a culture where a leaner management supports the rest of the workforce.

Postal delivery plans axed

Royal Mail has been forced to shelve controversial plans for a single postal delivery until next year after the experiment was branded “a shambles” by the Communication Workers Union. Union representatives held a series of meetings with the Royal Mail to discuss the plans, which were supposed to save the postal service GBP350m a year. Royal Mail says the new service had suffered “teething problems”.
