Publishers take issue with rising postal costs

Postal issues continue to be a headache for publishers the world over and price based reform is currently under review by operators in the UK, US and Australia.

Postal staff sort out backlog

Thirty Royal Mail staff worked through the weekend trying to clear a backlog of 50,000 letters at the Cheltenham sorting office.

The extra workers were drafted into Swindon Road where they sorted the post ready for delivery later this week.

Gywn Williams, sector operations manager for Gloucestershire, said first and second class mail will not be affected.

Customers will also be given added peace of mind with compensation cover for loss or damage to all worldwide destinations plus a signature on delivery, or electronic tracking and confirmation of delivery via the internet.

Royal Mail shake up sends Hays into slide

Shares in business services group Hays have plunged to a seven-year low after a shock profits warning.

The company blamed pressure in the business post market from Allan Leighton’s revamped Royal Mail.

The shares collapsed by 203/4p to 893/4p. New chief executive Colin Matthews arrives today, facing the possibility that Hays, whose market value has dived to £1.5bn, will be kicked out of the elite FTSE 100 index.
