Mail review not threat to north remote areas

POSTCOMM denied last night a proposed consultation exercise on deliveries in geographically remote areas will ease pressure on the Royal Mail to maintain deliveries across the North.
A spokesman confirmed the intention is to seek as wide a reaction as possible to a review of existing exemptions from the requirement for daily collections and deliveries under the Universal Obligation.
He spoke out following the release of a list of existing exemptions, such as deliveries to 60 homes in the Scoraig Peninsula in Loch Broom, via the community boat which only sails on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Postmen 'To sell stamps on doorstep'

RURAL postmen could sell stamps and collect mail from doorsteps under radical plans being drawn up by the Government.
Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt wants to offer extra services in isolated parts of Britain in a bid to breathe life into the ailing Post Office.
Other plans include opening post offices in village pubs and mobile offices travelling to small villages every week.
Ministers are also considering whether postmen could collect and deliver cash to homes.

Royal Mail targets home shoppers in online push

Royal Mail is encouraging more people to shop via mail order, with the launch of a new campaign aimed at increasing revenue from its business mailing arm.
The viral e-mail campaign will target customers with a propensity for home shopping, driving them to a microsite, www.royalmail.com/cataloguecollection. The site lists a wide range of catalogues that can be ordered online.
Three different creative executions have been designed, to prompt consumers to shop from their home computers, in their leisure time. Catalogues featured will range from football merchandise and mobile phones to ladies clothing.

Post merger talks lasted eight months

Talks over the possible merger of the Royal Mail and Parcelforce with the Dutch post office lasted for eight months before being called off, it was revealed today. The Government authorised discussions to be held between Consignia and Dutch postal firm TGP last July, but it emerged in March that common ground could not be found.
