Now Consignia wants to use your home as a postal depot

Consignia, formerly the Post Office, has sent leaflets to thousands of private homes over the past few weeks asking for volunteers to let their houses be used as temporary delivery depots, or ‘safe drops’.

The scheme works like this: sacks of letters are left at the safe drop house by Royal Mail van drivers. When the postman has finished his first round, instead of going back to the depot, he collects another sack of post from the safe drop.

Postal deregulation will hit countryside and the elderly

AS a customer who does not live in close range of a branch, I feel very strongly about the postal regulator’s plans to sell off the Post Office.

There will be many private firms only too willing to deliver bulk mail to towns and cities, but where will that leave people living in areas where there are only a few houses?

Does the regulator really think that the Post Office can ever survive once it has granted licences for private firms to cherry-pick, leaving just the unprofitable deliveries?

I think that every MP will know that it is impossible for the Post Office to compete on these terms.

Royal Mail misses all its targets

Royal Mail failed to meet any of its delivery targets in the nine months from April to December last year. Postwatch, the consumers’ group, condemned the result, saying that 300 million first-class letters arrived late in this period. Failure to reach all 13 service targets set by the postal regulator could mean fines for Consignia.

Nine out of ten first class letters arrive next day says Royal Mail

More than nine out of ten First Class letters are arriving the day after posting for the second three months in succession. Royal Mail is delivering a substantially better performance compared to a year ago but still has work to do in under-performing parts of the country if the year end target of 92.1% is to be met, Consignia said today. The latest quality of service report covering the final three months of 2001 showed that 90.4% of First Class letters arrived the day after posting. This was a 0.3 percentage point below the quarterly performance for July to September – but it is much better than the 87.0% result in the October to December period in 2000.

Second post axed in trial to cut costs

THE Royal Mail began the most radical and controversial shake-up in its history yesterday with the launch of trials for a two-tier system for businesses and households. Within the next few months, 14 centres in the country are to replace first and second post for households with one delivery just before or just after midday. Businesses will receive one early post.
