Russian Post and Aeroflot in cooperation deal

Russian Post has sealed a major cooperation agreement with Aeroflot to speed up mail and express shipment transportation and will also start selling airline tickets in its nationwide postal offices. The memorandum of understanding was signed by Russian Post CEO Andrei Kazmin and Aeroflot CEO Valery Okulov on Friday (June 20).

The Russian postal operator announced that the cooperation is designed to increase the speed of mail handling at airports and to increase mail volumes transported via Aeroflot and its SkyTeam alliance partners. The mutual cooperation would help it to establish a leading position in express transportation of urgent shipments, it pointed out.

Kazmin said the agreement will enable the two companies to better respond to the needs of private and business customers for high-quality postal and transport logistics solutions.

Under the agreement, the two companies will coordinate their activities to keep up with the demand for air transportation of mail, especially in the north of Russia, Siberia and Far East, by expanding the air network of domestic mail transportation and using appropriate types of freighters.

The memorandum also includes sales of Aeroflot tickets in post offices as well as joint advertising and other projects through the mutual use of the companies’ networks and opening of Russian Post service points at Sheremetyevo international airport.

Kenya will chair the 24th Universal Postal Congress in Geneva from 23 July to 12 August 2008 as well as the UPU’s Council of Administration for 2009-2012.

The Kenyan Government has confirmed that Mr. Bishar A. Hussein, a former Postmaster General of Kenya Post and currently Kenya’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, will chair the Congress.

When the UPU Council of Administration decided last February to change the venue of the 24th Universal Postal Congress from Nairobi to Geneva, it also passed a resolution inviting Kenya to chair the Congress and the future Council of Administration. Kenya has now formally accepted these invitations.

Kenya will also chair the Council of Administration for 2009-2012, a UPU body made up of 41 member countries and responsible for overseeing the organization’s finances, international postal regulations and strategic direction of the Union between Congresses.

In other Congress news, France’s Edouard Dayan, current UPU Director General, and China’s Guozhong Huang, current Deputy Director General, will run for a second four-year mandate. No other candidates have stepped forward for the top UPU jobs.
So far, Great Britain, Greece, the Russian Federation and Switzerland have announced their candidacy for the chairmanship of the Postal Operations Council, a 40-member UPU body in charge of overseeing a range of postal operational issues such as security, quality of service, technical cooperation and development, postal financial services and more. Other countries could still announce their candidacy up until Congress.

DHL expands coverage for urgent deliveries in Russia

DHL’s Time Definite service expanded with over 10 000 new city pairs opened for Domestic Express 9:00 and Domestic Express 12:00 in the Russian market this year. This wide level of coverage for pre-9 and pre-12 services is unmatched by any of DHL’s competitors in the Russian market. It gives customers an unprecedented opportunity to deliver business materials to their customers in cities such as Noyabrsk in Siberia’s oil and gas heartland and Nakhodka, a port on the Pacific coast, with added urgency and reliability.

“DHL Express Russia started preparations for the geographical expansion of its Domestic Express 9:00 and Domestic Express 12:00 products around 3 years ago, and the rapid broadening of our coverage in 2008 reflects the intensive work by our Product Group, Operations, Customer Service and regional staff in particular,’ noted Natalia Bochkova, Head of Commercial Russia, ‘We expect that the investments we have made in all the process, equipment and performance measurements will provide services to the Russian market with on-time delivery as expected by our customers. We’re proud to be the first company in Russia offering this unique product range and coverage.’

The extensive expansion of Time Definite products responds to the growing demand for higher service levels amongst Russian customers as they increase their volumes in the Russian regions outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg. The extended service puts DHL in the lead in an increasingly competitive growth market.
