DHL to expand its business activities in Russia

DHL continued in 2005 its success in the Russian market. DHL Express reports that in 2005 shipment volumes increased by more than 30% in comparison with 2004, while revenue increased by over 40%. The strongest volume growth was in DHL Domestic products. In 2005 DHL Domestic MidDay Express 12 and DHL Domestic StartDay Express 9 services both had growth rate of over 100% in 2005 as opposed to 2004. ‘I am very pleased that the positive trend of DHL’s development in the Russian market continues. Finance minister suggests corporatizing Russian mail service

Russia’s Finance Minister Thursday suggested that the country’s state-owned postal monopoly should be corporatized. “Attracting private investors… will make it possible to modernize Russia’s postal services thanks to billions of dollars in private investment,” Alexei Kudrin told a Cabinet meeting. First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev welcomed the idea, saying: “Obviously, the mail [network] is an infrastructure and monopolistic area, and in desperate need of investment.” But Medvedev called for extreme caution in making the shift, given the vital social role of postal services in communities throughout Russia. Igor Syrtsov, the company’s chief executive, said last Friday that it would incur losses of USD36 million in 2006.
