South African Post Office tariffs to increase by 3%

South Africans will pay five cents or three percent more to post a standard letter as from April 1 this year. Communication Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri announced that she had accepted the recommendation from the postal regulator to increase the postal tariffs.

South Africa Post puts stamp on first profit in years

The SA Post Office was poised to post its first operating profit in many years, when it closed its books at the end of March.

The parastatal is expected to post an operating profit of R1,8m, compared with the R154,6m loss in the previous financial year and R577,4m in March 2001. Revenue of R4,5bn (R4bn) has been budgeted for, with operating expenses at R4,466bn (R4,243bn). Chief financial officer Nick Buick briefed Parliament’s committee on public enterprises on the Post Office’s turnaround, saying it was achieved partly through the termination of value-destroying contracts to the tune of about R200m, which had produced savings of about R100m.

Mozambique Post Office urged to be more flexible

Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Tomas Salomao, has recognised that mismanagement by the former board of directors, and the absence of new information technologies, are at the root of the financial crisis currently faced by the Mozambican Post Office. Speaking at the closing session of a meeting of the Post Office National Council, Salomao said the company should accompany technological changes and make use of the fact that it still has offices throughout the country.

African post offices to have internet and e-mail

All 389 African post offices countrywide are to have Internet by June.

Besides, the government expects all primary schools to be on the Internet by 2006. 69 post offices already have the facilities.

The public will have access to advanced communication through e-mail at a reasonable fee in line with the government’s spirit of promoting information technology, Transport and Communications minister John Michuki said.
