SA Post Office not insolvent

The South African Post Office denied on Thursday that it was technically insolvent saying “(such) reports are far from the truth and represent a serious deviation from the facts”. It was responding after opposition parties lambasted the Post Office on Wednesday for continuing operating losses and tabling its annual report late in Parliament. “To understand the state of the Post Office finances it is important to look at the state of affairs from a holistic point of view. “Analysing figures selectively could only serve to press unnecessary panic buttons,” South African Post Office spokesman Robert Nkuna said.

Minister might stamp out South African postal tariffs rise

Consumers will pay 10% more to post a standard letter from next month, with the postal regulator having approved another hefty rise in postal tariffs.

The move could bring the SA Post Office under government’s spotlight following concern expressed recently by Public Enterprises Minister Jeff Radebe at the effect of administered price increases on inflation.

JOINT VENTURE TO SAVE POST OFFICE MILLIONS

E-procurement and e-sourcing provider Commerce One has formed a joint venture with the South African Post Office (SAPO) which will see SAPO implementing the company’s Commerce One 5.0 software.

The venture is expected to save SAPO about R100 million a year through improved sourcing and procurement strategies.

Michael Bosman, CEO of Commerce One, says the joint venture, of which SAPO is the majority stakeholder, is “a prelude to a broader offering. The joint venture is to use the technology to prove the benefits to government as a whole.”

South Africa Post Office takes the electronic route

The Department of Communications says members of the public will in future be able to send documents electronically, via e-mail and SMS (short message system) from their local post offices.

According to the department’s deputy director-general Phumelele Nzimande, e-post will be made available at all post offices in the country as well as at multipurpose community centres (MPCCs) during the next financial year.
