Mexico's Postal Service Aims For MXN 10 Billion in Revenue By 2012

Mexico’s postal service said Thursday it aims to be self-funding with annual revenue of more than 10 billion pesos (USD 923.9 million) by 2012 under a five-year modernization plan.

In a press release, the postal service, or Sepomex, said to reach that goal, it will increase the number of mail carriers to 30,000 and open about 500 new offices by the end of 2012.

Sepomex currently has about 20,000 employees, 1,370 offices and annual revenue of about USD 250 million.

As part of its modernization program, the postal service will implement a tracking system for packages and has reached an agreement with the postal employees union to improve productivity.

Most firms in Mexico use private package delivery companies because of reliability problems with the postal service.

Sepomex has only two major corporate customers – phone company Telefonos de Mexico (TMX) and Citigroup Inc.’s (C) local unit, Banamex.

TTPost gripped by protests

Workers at TTPost offices throughout the country staged a second day of protest action yesterday to highlight their dissatisfaction with the TTPostal Corporation over salary negotiations for the period 2005/2007.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Postal Workers’ Union (TTPWU) General Secretary Reginald Crichlow, the majority of workers heeded the union’s call and stayed off the job.

“The workers took similar action on Wednesday with almost 70 percent to 80 percent of workers not reporting for duty” said Crichlow.

He added that many post offices including those at Curepe, Laventille, San Juan, Morvant, Arima, Maloney, La Romain and Couva remained with skeletal staff yesterday. Questioned as to the impact of the action, Crichlow said that “if there was a high percentage of officers absent, then there will be a negative impact on the delivery of mail.”

The workers are disgruntled with the salary increases being offered by the Corporation. Crichlow explained that the official negotiating period is 2005/2007.

Spain and the UPU undertake to develop postal financial services in Latin America

Magdalena Alvarez Arza, the Spanish minister responsible for the postal sector, and Edouard Dayan, Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), signed an agreement in Madrid yesterday whereby Spain and the UPU undertook to implement the International Financial Transfer System (IFS). Under this agreement, Spain, through the postal operator Correos, will connect Latin America with the UPU’s electronic financial network, thereby improving the quality of postal services and providing small and medium-sized businesses with access to postal markets.

In addition to the strategic benefits of this agreement, which formalizes Spain’s support for the UPU’s worldwide electronic fund transfer network, the Spanish government will help migrant workers based in Spain to keep in contact with their countries of origin and to transfer part of their savings to their families in a secure and affordable manner.

Spain is currently the leading issuer of remittances sent from the European Union to Latin America. According to a study conducted by the Bank of Spain, in 2006, the 4.5 million immigrants residing in Spain sent over 6.25 billion EUR to their families back home. Spain’s participation in the IFS network will also open up new opportunities with the Maghreb countries.

As part the regional development plan created by the UPU and the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (PUASP), a pilot project between Spain, Chile and Uruguay will be launched shortly, based on the action plan approved by all parties. This agreement will also mark the beginning of a new phase of closer cooperation between the teams of Correos, the UPU, PUASP and the Latin American Posts, which will together provide the technical expertise needed to establish these financial flows.
